Tennessee Republican Rep. Diana Harshbarger is facing mounting backlash after using racially charged language to mock Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green—an outspoken 77-year-old Black congressman known for his fiery opposition to Donald Trump.
During an interview with a local Christian group, Harshbarger described Green—who recently made headlines for dramatically protesting Trump’s address to Congress—as “boy,” a term long condemned for its deeply racist connotations when used by white individuals to refer to Black men.
“Al Green was over here with his cane and I’m like, ‘Gosh dang it, boy,’” Harshbarger told Johnson City-based F.A.M.E. Ministries in a recorded discussion. “He does not need that cane. That cane is a prop. I swear it’s not real.”
Her comments have been slammed as racially demeaning and ignorant of historical context. The term “boy,” when directed at an older Black man, carries the weight of decades of systemic racism—used to belittle, dehumanize, and strip Black men of dignity during the Jim Crow era and beyond. Civil rights groups have long pointed out that it’s “a verbal relic of white supremacy.”
Mocking a Protest
Rep. Green had stirred up the House chamber in February by rising mid-speech and pointing his cane directly at Trump, protesting Republican-backed proposals to slash Medicaid. The protest led to a formal censure, but also earned him praise from progressives and healthcare advocates across the country.
“He stood up for millions who rely on Medicaid,” said Jamila Price, a Houston-based healthcare activist. “And now he’s being mocked with racist language for it? It’s disgraceful.”
Rather than addressing the substance of Green’s protest, Harshbarger zeroed in on his appearance. “I’m wondering,” she continued, “one of my colleagues said, ‘Unscrew the gold part off of it and see if there’s a gun in there.’ I’m, like, ‘I don’t know about that man. He’s just Weird Al.’”
A Pattern Among Republicans?
This isn’t the first time Green has been targeted with racially tinged commentary. Shortly after the incident, Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert—no stranger to controversy—called Green’s walking cane a “pimp cane” on social media, sparking similar outrage.
“She might as well have said the n-word,” civil rights attorney Elie Mystal said Monday. “It’s all about the same power dynamic—mocking a Black elder for daring to speak truth to power.”
Silence and Condemnation
Neither Harshbarger’s office nor Green’s have responded to requests for comment as of Monday evening. But Democratic lawmakers are demanding accountability.
“Calling a 77-year-old Black man ‘boy’ on tape isn’t just inappropriate—it’s racist,” tweeted Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX). “We can’t let this slide.”
The Congressional Black Caucus is reportedly preparing a formal rebuke, while progressive groups are calling for a censure vote against Harshbarger, accusing her of “engaging in racially hostile rhetoric unbefitting of a U.S. representative.”
Historical Echoes
The episode draws uncomfortable parallels to America’s long and painful history of white lawmakers using racially demeaning language toward Black colleagues. The fact that it happened in 2025—and during an interview with a Christian ministry—only underscores the urgency, advocates say.
“The racism is never subtle,” said Dr. Maya Holmes, a political science professor at Howard University. “It’s deliberate, it’s coded, and it’s meant to silence and ridicule.”
As the firestorm grows, Harshbarger’s silence is only deepening the controversy—and reminding Americans that for some lawmakers, the lessons of the past remain unlearned.

His attitude towards PRESIDENT TRUMP during the speech, waving his cane as a weapon, his epithets, his arrogant demeanor, his really stupid grand-standing demonstrated a PURE CHILDISH attitude, without the respect due in that time. The fact that most blacks on the left act like babies having
tantrums at all times because of their hateful racist TDS, makes them just like kids. I would call that stupid imbecile ” boy” also with the explanations as said above. They do not like it? They can all go to hell. I am a 90% pure Hispanic blood. I have been the recipient of their racist comments all my life in the US. They can all go to hell, those horrendous abject hypocrites.
Not going to give it any mind… blacks call each other the N-word a thousand times a day…
You can’t be a Politician if you are thin-skinned. What you sow is what you’ll reap. It’s called “karma”.
You talk about language not befitting a Congress person ?????? So it’s okay to call Trump Nazi, but not to call Al a boy????? This is the heigth of hypocrisy. If you want charges for this Congress woman to be brought before the ettics committe, you must first bring charges to the hundreds of reprentatives who called Trump atrocious names. At least Trump supporters speak the truth—-Al speaks untruths.
Listen, this 77yr old leftist looney tune, green, acts like a little boy, so why not call him one. He is such an arrogant, narcistic, lefty, just a pathetic dummycrap, taking up space, he sure doesn’t do anything, for his constituents. He’s another embarrassing joke of the dead, chaotic, leaderless, eat each other, stab me in the back party.
He’s been called worse, believe me!!
Too freaking bad. Who gives a crap about Green. He is one freaking nut. He first like it f him. Sent from my iPhone
He said, she said!! This is news??? I remember when there was real news like “ and there you have it Neil Armstrong has just set foot on the moon!” Or “Mr Gorbachev tear this wall down!” That was news! This is just crybaby stuff in both sides!!
Maybe we should take to heart what JFK said in that famous speech!
“Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country!”
Let’s just fix America for our children and grand children and their children!

This feigned outrage is hilarious. Pontn1. Who gives a damn if she’s a racist or not. Biden was a lifelong racist and you Democrat put him in the White House. Point 2. Apparently one.cannot call somebody a boy, but you can call White republicans Rednecks , extremists, intolerables, Nazis, traitors and any other “racist“ type insult you choose.Point 3. She should be forgiven because she used a term that began with the Democrat parties Jim Crow so thought it was O.K.
all the above are racists. easy to tell just reading their illiterate asses. as someone who rep. green helped with a small issue over 40 yrs ago, i can attest to the fact that he truly cares about his constituents & all houstonians, i no longer lived in houston when he helped me. your people won’t even hold town halls. they also can’t seem to get their noses outta trump’s ass. if ANY of you could read or write, you’d know calling a black man goes back to slavery. in many instances just that would cause a bullet to the head by many. and i’m lily white, married to a lily white non-bigoted man.
i also heard that this “female” congresswoman was part of the original tenn. mountain boys. until a tryst took his pecker off. this is why she calls herself a female now.
This Leftist Congressman acts like a child when he doesn’t get his way!!
OK Juju lets get it straight. All who are in favor of DT are racists but those who are against America, the constitution and the bill of rights are perfect. Not one democrat has done anything for ” we the people” only for self. Go to start. KKK founded and supported by the democrats. PP the murder organization founded and financed by democrats. The murder of JFK and RFK done by the democrats and paid for by them. Allowing the BLM and antiva gangs to destroy privet property, murder and burn as well as destroy police property in the states of Oragon, Washington, California and Chicago was done by the democrats. Everything the democrats have blamed TD for was either done or said by the democrats. Blacks call blacks the n word and nothing said. Get your head out o the Kenyan Obama’s a . You all supported the biggest TRAITOR in our history, Joe brain dead Biden and you call us racists.
She called it as it is.
