Official Melts Down in Front of Children at White House Easter Event (Video)

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stunned families and staff at the White House Easter Egg Roll on Sunday with a heated, emotional tirade aimed at reporters—while his own children watched from a few feet away.

The spectacle came just hours after The New York Times dropped a damning report alleging Hegseth had shared classified military plans—including potential strikes on Yemen—in a private Signal chat titled “Defense Huddle,” which included his wife Jennifer Rauchet and his brother. It’s the second time in a month Hegseth has been caught discussing sensitive military operations on a commercial messaging app.

Shouting and visibly shaken, Hegseth called the media “hoaxsters” and accused journalists of trying to “slash and burn” his reputation. “This group right here,” he said, jabbing his finger toward a press pool, “they peddle lies from anonymous sources—disgruntled hacks—and call it journalism.”

His voice cracked as he pointed to his children: “This is why we’re fighting. This is why we’re standing up to the fake news media and their Democrat enablers.”

But critics weren’t buying it.

Former Pentagon spokesman John Ullyot, who resigned just last week, unleashed a blistering op-ed on Sunday. “It’s been a month of total chaos at the Pentagon. Hegseth is spiraling—and everyone inside knows it,” Ullyot wrote. “The man is more concerned with protecting his image than protecting classified information.”

Even among Republicans, frustration is mounting. A senior Senate aide, speaking on background, said, “There’s growing doubt that Hegseth will survive the next few weeks.”

Last month, The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg revealed he had been mistakenly added to a Signal thread where top Trump officials, including Hegseth, openly discussed potential military actions in Yemen. At the time, Hegseth dismissed the report as “fake news.” Now, a second leak appears to confirm that he’s been casually discussing war strategies with people outside the chain of command—including family.

That’s not just a breach of protocol—it’s a threat to national security.

Hegseth, a former Fox News host and Trump loyalist, was narrowly confirmed by the Senate in January, despite concerns about past behavior. Critics cited his heavy drinking, a 2017 sexual misconduct allegation (which Hegseth insists was consensual), and an affair with Rauchet while still married to his previous wife.

“I’ve spoken with the president,” Hegseth said defiantly on Sunday. “We’re on the same page, and we’re going to keep fighting.”

But inside the Pentagon, that fight is starting to look more like a cover-up—and some are wondering how many more leaks it’ll take before the dam finally bursts.
