A historic chapter for women in the military was abruptly interrupted this week, and all signs point to politics—specifically, portraits of Donald Trump and his newly confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Colonel Sheyla Baez Ramirez, who just last year became the first woman ever to lead Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, has been suspended from her command role. The Army insists the move isn’t tied to misconduct—but the timing tells a very different story.
What triggered the sudden suspension? A photo wall.
Images posted last week by the Pentagon’s Rapid Response team showed something that sent conservative circles into a frenzy: the official portraits of Trump and Hegseth were turned backward on Fort McCoy’s Chain of Command display—facing the wall instead of the hallway, unlike the other leadership photos.
Within hours, the photos were corrected. But the damage, at least to Col. Ramirez’s career, was already done.
Regarding the Ft. McCoy Chain of Command wall controversy….

WE FIXED IT!
Also, an investigation has begun to figure out exactly what happened. pic.twitter.com/y0gcRtBQZq
A Department of Defense spokesperson confirmed that an “investigation is ongoing” and that they are working to determine who was responsible for the so-called “vandalism.” The Army Reserve added that senior leadership was “unaware” of the incident until after the photos surfaced on social media and that the situation was immediately “corrected.”
Despite the controversy, officials have emphasized that Ramirez’s suspension is not linked to wrongdoing—raising more questions than answers. No explanation has been given for why the first Latina woman to ever command the base was removed so abruptly while the investigation was still in its earliest stages.
Ramirez, a highly decorated officer who commissioned in 1999, served in senior intelligence roles before taking command of Fort McCoy in July 2024. Her historic appointment was seen as a breakthrough for both women and Latinas in the armed forces.
In her first public remarks after assuming command, Ramirez said, “I think that showing the public that we could have diversity in every part of our society is important.”
For many Democrats and progressives, her suspension feels like a warning shot aimed at military leaders who may not appear “loyal enough” to the Trump administration.
“This is chilling,” said a former Army official who asked to remain anonymous. “A woman breaks through decades of barriers and gets sidelined over something as petty as a photo prank? It feels like political punishment.”
As Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—a Trump loyalist with no prior Pentagon leadership experience—takes the reins, some in Washington fear a growing culture of political enforcement within the ranks. And for Col. Ramirez, who once symbolized the Army’s slow march toward inclusion, the cost may be her career.
The Army has yet to name an interim commander or say when a final decision will be made on Ramirez’s future. For now, the message seems clear: even in the military, optics may matter more than service.

Oh No! The first Latino female Colonial loses her command!! What? There is way to much of this “identity politics” out there!! I don’t care that this Colonial is a woman or that she’s Latino. What I do care about is she competent!! That’s all that matters. This article clearly shows Nextgennews has no idea why she lost her command, they are guessing it’s about identity politics and totalitarianism….
But rather, politics has no place in our military all that matters is readiness and the ability to do the job. Any military runs on respect for the chain of command. Whoever turned those pictures around put politics into the military! That’s wrong, it would be wrong if they did that to President Obama too!! This is not a news story of merit it’s political hogwash once again
Yes, we know it has nothing to do with “women” but to do with arrogant Democrat HEI hires!
Obviously this wonderful hispanic Col. didn’t value her job, because of her rhetoric, and other things. See ya.
There has to be severe mental delusions for anybody to profess they are of another sex. That’s what’s wrong with our nation to begin with. God didn’t make mistakes when we were conceived. We were born one way or the other, MALE OR FEMALE and those that are trying to trans are telling themselves a lie and doing their best to tell the rest of us that same lie.
One man who ran for our vice president put tampon dispensers in boys rest rooms. How does this stupidity get so high in our government?
If this stupidity continues our nation WILL FALL!!!!!!
That’s America going further down the rabbit hole
If the situation was the other way around, where a sitting Republican President lost to a Democratic candidate, this same Colonel would have switched the photographs even before the incoming President was sworn in. She did highlight diversity upon assuming her role. Was she awarded a DEI promotion ?
It seems those who are Competent are let go, the Incompetent stay. Hegseth violated the Signal chat twice now( latest his wife was participating and listening to top secret business with No clearance) It is time to do things right .
This is the second case where the president, vo et all. Faces were not displayed in a chain of command arrangement of photos. In the Greenland case, seems that was the politics of the base commander. These are posted in very public places. It makes a statement – in a very negative way. Whoever did that made those commands very political and the Base Commander, regardless of race, creed or politics is RESPONSIBLE. This is often missed by reporters who work in a less regulated area, take notes in suites, go home, grab coffee and write the story without references other than their notes while in their pjs.
U want to play games, trying to be funny, cost u your job. Why do people have to be so hateful. arrogant, and just stupid? Do your dam job and , quit the fkg hate, grow up, and act like real Americans. This pettiness is a disgrace, childish, and not helping anybody.
