PANZI, Congo — A deadly flu-like illness has swept through the Panzi health zone in Kwango province, southwest Congo, leaving at least 143 people dead in just over two weeks, local officials confirmed.

Provincial health minister Apollinaire Yumba described the situation as dire. “Patients are presenting with fever, headaches, persistent cough, and severe anemia,” Yumba explained during a press briefing. The outbreak, which began on November 10, has caused mounting panic as health workers struggle to contain the spread.

The death toll varies between reports. Deputy provincial governor Rémy Saki estimated that fatalities could range from 67 to as high as 143. “This is unprecedented. We have mobilized a team of epidemiological experts to travel to the affected region. Their task is to collect samples and identify the cause,” Saki told the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Authorities have issued urgent warnings to the local population. Yumba urged residents to avoid contact with the deceased to prevent further contamination. “We need national and international aid. Medical supplies, protective gear, and laboratory support are critical,” he pleaded.

A Nation on Edge

The outbreak comes at a time when Congo is already grappling with another public health crisis—mpox. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Congo has reported over 47,000 suspected cases of mpox this year alone, with more than 1,000 deaths. The country’s fragile healthcare system is being pushed to its limits.

In an anonymous statement, a WHO official confirmed that the organization is closely monitoring the situation. “We have deployed a team to Panzi to assist local health authorities in investigating the outbreak. Samples are being collected for laboratory analysis,” the official revealed.

Historical Challenges

Congo’s healthcare infrastructure has long struggled under the weight of repeated epidemics. The country is still recovering from previous outbreaks of Ebola and measles, which claimed thousands of lives. Health experts warn that this latest mystery disease could exacerbate existing vulnerabilities.

Local residents, meanwhile, are living in fear. “We are terrified,” said Marie Kanku, a Panzi market vendor. “People are dying every day, and we don’t know what is causing it. We need help—quickly.”

The coming days will be critical as health officials race to identify the illness and implement containment measures. For now, the people of Panzi can only wait—and hope—for answers.
