Melania Trump ‘Snubs’ Husband Yet Again

Melania Trump is skipping one of her husband’s biggest political events of the year, adding another high-profile absence to a first lady tenure already marked by long stretches away from the public spotlight.

The first lady has no plans to attend President Donald Trump’s Republican midterm convention in Dallas next week, a White House official confirmed to the Washington Examiner.

The two-day event, scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10, is designed to fire up Republican voters ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Trump is now expected to speak on both nights, while Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to address the convention on the opening night.

Melania’s decision to stay away comes as dozens of Republican lawmakers and candidates are also planning to skip the Dallas gathering.

A Politico survey cited by multiple outlets found at least 45 Republicans who said they would not attend. Some pointed to scheduling conflicts, campaign events or family commitments, while others said they would rather remain in their districts ahead of Election Day.

The cost has also raised eyebrows. House members have reportedly been asked to pay at least $25,000 for certain convention packages, with more expensive options climbing substantially higher.

One anonymous House Republican went so far as to call the convention a “waste of time,” arguing that Republicans should be focused on persuading independent voters rather than holding another event aimed largely at the party’s existing base.

Melania’s absence is especially notable because the first lady has maintained an unusually low public profile during Trump’s second term.

The Daily Beast reported that she had made only 40 public appearances as of Sept. 4. Her most recent major outing with the president came on Aug. 23, when the couple attended the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington. The White House published photographs showing the president and first lady greeting drivers, taking a ceremonial lap and watching the race together.

Melania has also made appearances tied to her Fostering the Future initiative, which focuses on helping young people transitioning out of foster care.

Her relatively rare appearances have repeatedly attracted attention, particularly whenever she resurfaces after spending weeks largely outside public view.

Now her decision to miss the Dallas convention puts even more attention on an event already facing questions about turnout.

Trump was originally expected to deliver the convention’s closing address on Sept. 10. He has since expanded his role and will speak on both nights, with a Republican official telling Reuters that the president wants to “set the tone” for the gathering.

Organizers are also facing stiff competition for television viewers. The convention overlaps with major NFL programming, potentially forcing Trump’s political spectacle to compete against some of the biggest sporting audiences on television. Reuters reported that concerns about participation have prompted organizers to consider bringing in more grassroots supporters to help fill the American Airlines Center.

Still, Trump has made clear that he intends to play a major role in the GOP’s midterm push.

The president said this week that he plans to campaign aggressively for Republican candidates in competitive races and has urged GOP lawmakers to run on the record of his second administration.

But when the party gathers in Dallas next week, one of the most recognizable people in Trump’s orbit will apparently be missing.

Melania Trump will be staying home.
