In a disturbing incident that has outraged the nation, a Brazilian police officer was caught on video throwing a young delivery worker off a bridge during a routine traffic stop. The shocking footage, leaked online, has sparked widespread condemnation and led to the immediate suspension of the officer and his colleagues.

The dramatic encounter unfolded on Monday in the Vila Clara neighborhood of São Paulo. Military Police officer Luan Pereira, 29, stopped Marcelo do Amaral, 25, for operating a motorcycle without license plates. What began as a traffic violation quickly escalated into a horrifying scene.

Caught on Camera

In the video, Pereira is seen gripping do Amaral by the shirt and dragging him to the edge of the bridge. With shocking nonchalance, Pereira lifts one of do Amaral’s legs and pushes him over the side, as several other officers stand by, doing nothing to intervene.

Witnesses told local media outlet Metropoles that do Amaral plunged into a shallow stream below. Remarkably, he managed to crawl out of the water and walk up a nearby hill, where a friend rushed him to a local hospital. His injuries, though not life-threatening, left his family reeling.

“Unacceptable!” Says Victim’s Father

Do Amaral’s father, Antonio do Amaral, expressed his disbelief and anger.
He’s fine, but we haven’t been able to talk to him yet. This is unacceptable!” Antonio told Jornal Nacional.
The police are here to protect us, not harm us. My son is a hardworking delivery man. He has no criminal record, no trouble with the law. I want answers. Why did this happen?

A Routine Stop Turns Violent

According to an initial police report, the officers were chasing a group of motorcyclists through the neighborhood, which was hosting a party at the time. The situation allegedly turned chaotic when partygoers began hurling bottles and rocks at the officers. In the melee, one man was reportedly shot.

However, the report notably omitted any mention of Pereira throwing do Amaral off the bridge. Witnesses suggest that the tension escalated when the young delivery worker questioned the officer about delaying his order, a critical issue for workers in São Paulo’s booming gig economy.

Official Response and Immediate Action

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas wasted no time in condemning the officer’s actions.
This behavior is inexcusable. The Military Police are meant to uphold public safety, not terrorize civilians,” de Freitas wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Anyone who throws a person off a bridge has no place in our police force.

The governor confirmed that Pereira and 12 other officers from the Diadema battalion had been suspended pending a thorough investigation.

Legal Authorities Speak Out

The outrage has reached the highest levels of the state government. São Paulo Attorney General Paolo Costa called the incident “shocking and absolutely unacceptable.
From the video evidence, it is clear that the suspect was already subdued. The officers had a duty to transport him safely to the station, not endanger his life,” Costa said in a statement.
A special task force has been assembled to investigate the incident, with Costa promising swift justice.

Pereira’s Troubled History

This isn’t the first time Officer Pereira has faced scrutiny. In March 2023, he was involved in the fatal shooting of Maycon Valério, a 31-year-old motorcyclist. Valério, pursued for speeding and riding without a helmet, allegedly aimed a weapon at Pereira, prompting the officer to shoot him 12 times.

Pereira was cleared of any wrongdoing in that case, with the São Paulo State Public Ministry ruling his actions were in self-defense. However, critics argue the pattern of excessive force raises serious questions about his conduct.

Public Outcry and Growing Calls for Reform

The incident has ignited a national conversation about police brutality and the use of excessive force in Brazil. Social media has been flooded with demands for justice, with the hashtags #JusticeForMarcelo and #EndPoliceViolence trending across platforms.

Local activist Fernanda Ribeiro called for a complete overhaul of the Military Police.
This is not an isolated incident. It’s part of a larger problem. Our communities live in fear, not of criminals, but of those sworn to protect us,” she said.

As the investigation unfolds, the nation watches closely, demanding answers—and accountability—for an act of violence that many say has crossed an unforgivable line.
