Savannah Guthrie is back on Today — but viewers are still asking questions after the beloved host abruptly vanished from the live broadcast in the middle of Wednesday’s show.
The 54-year-old anchor stunned fans when she suddenly exited NBC’s morning program just 90 minutes into the broadcast, leaving co-host Craig Melvin to awkwardly explain her absence on-air.
“Savannah had to leave a little early. She’ll be right back tomorrow, though,” Melvin told viewers, offering no details about the unexpected departure.
The mystery only fueled even more speculation because Guthrie’s return to television has already been surrounded by heartbreak and tension following the shocking disappearance of her mother earlier this year.
As readers know, Guthrie had stepped away from Today for nearly two months after her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, vanished from her home in Tucson, Arizona, under terrifying circumstances.
Authorities said blood and signs of forced entry were discovered inside the home after Nancy disappeared on February 1. Doorbell camera footage reportedly captured a masked man armed with a gun approaching the property shortly before she vanished.
Despite months of investigation, police have still not announced any arrests or publicly identified any suspects.
That’s why Savannah’s sudden exit from Wednesday’s show instantly raised alarm bells among viewers who feared there may have been another devastating development behind the scenes.
But according to a source who spoke to Page Six, the anchor’s departure “had nothing to do with her mom” and was allegedly tied to “some sort of appointment.”
Still, fans noticed Guthrie appeared emotional during Thursday morning’s broadcast after she returned to the show. During one segment, producers displayed a childhood photo of the NBC star, prompting a visibly somber reaction.
“That was in my backyard,” Guthrie quietly said while looking emotional on-air.
The timing of her abrupt disappearance also comes as the investigation into her mother’s case has exploded into a bitter public feud involving Kash Patel and Arizona law enforcement officials.
Patel claimed this week that the FBI was effectively shut out of the investigation during the crucial first days after Nancy vanished.
Appearing on Sean Hannity’s podcast, Patel alleged local authorities blocked federal involvement during the most critical phase of the case.
“The first 48 hours of anyone’s disappearance are the most critical,” Patel said. “And for four days, we were kept out of the investigation.”
But Chris Nanos quickly denied those accusations, adding another layer of chaos to the already disturbing mystery.
Meanwhile, viewers continue closely watching Savannah’s every appearance as concern surrounding her family tragedy refuses to fade.
