A tragic turn of events unfolded in Spain as a police officer died while helping manage the arrival of a cruise ship linked to a deadly rat-borne virus outbreak that has already claimed multiple lives across Europe.

The unnamed officer, 62, reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack Sunday while assisting with security operations during the disembarkation of passengers from the MV Hondius in Tenerife. The cruise ship had been placed under emergency health protocols after several passengers were infected with the dangerous Andes strain of hantavirus.

Spanish Health Minister Mónica García addressed the heartbreaking incident during a press conference, offering condolences to the officer’s family and fellow members of the Guardia Civil.

“I would like to express our condolences to the family, to all the Guardia Civil,” García said.

The MV Hondius has been at the center of growing international concern after health officials confirmed seven hantavirus infections tied to the voyage. Three people have died so far, with authorities confirming that at least two of those deaths were directly caused by the virus.

Hantavirus is typically spread through contact with rodents or their droppings, and the Andes strain has raised alarms because of its potential for person-to-person transmission in rare cases. The outbreak has triggered a coordinated international response as passengers scattered across multiple countries after leaving the ship.

Former passengers from the cruise have now reportedly been hospitalized in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, South Africa, Spain and Saint Helena as health authorities race to track possible infections and prevent further spread.

Despite the alarming headlines, the World Health Organization has emphasized that the outbreak remains localized and is not considered a pandemic threat at this time. Still, the CDC has elevated the situation to a Level 3 response, underscoring growing concern among global health officials.

The sudden death of the officer has only added to the fear and chaos surrounding the cruise ship outbreak, as investigators continue trying to determine how the virus spread onboard and whether additional cases could emerge in the coming days.
