A devastating helicopter crash has claimed the lives of four close family members of Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey — marking a heartbreaking chapter for one of the state’s most prominent conservative figures.
According to authorities, the crash occurred Wednesday evening in rural Illinois and remains under active investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board. Bailey’s campaign confirmed Thursday that the victims were his son, 37-year-old Zachary Bailey; Zachary’s wife, Kelsey; and their two young children, ages 12 and 7.
In an emotional statement shared on social media, Bailey’s campaign said the family is “heartbroken by this unimaginable loss” and asked for privacy “as they lean on their faith during this profoundly difficult time.”
Bailey, 59, a lifelong farmer from Xenia, Illinois, has long tied his public image to family and faith. Alongside his wife, Cindy, he operates a private Christian academy and runs a large family farm — ventures he’s often cited as examples of his conservative, small-town values.
The former state senator and representative made national headlines during his 2022 gubernatorial campaign, where he positioned himself as a Trump-aligned populist seeking to “bring Springfield back to the people.” Despite former President Donald Trump’s endorsement, Bailey ultimately lost that race to Democratic incumbent J.B. Pritzker, 55 percent to 42 percent.
Undeterred, Bailey sought a congressional seat in 2024 but fell short in the GOP primary against Rep. Mike Bost. Just last month, Bailey announced plans to make another run for governor in 2026 — a comeback campaign now shadowed by profound personal tragedy.
Friends and supporters from across the political spectrum have expressed condolences. “Darren and Cindy’s loss is unimaginable,” wrote one longtime supporter on Facebook. “They’ve always put faith and family first. We’re all praying for them tonight.”
While investigators work to determine what caused the fatal crash, local church leaders in Clay County have organized prayer vigils for the Bailey family. “This is a man who has given so much to his community,” said Pastor Rick Larkin of Bible Baptist Church. “Now it’s our turn to give back — through prayer, compassion, and presence.”
Bailey has not yet made a public appearance since the tragedy but is expected to release a statement in the coming days.
