Donald Trump’s grip on Republican leadership is beginning to crack wide open. House Speaker Mike Johnson, one of Trump’s most loyal defenders on Capitol Hill, was caught in a stunning hot mic moment that suggested even he believes the president is spiraling out of control.

The exchange, first aired by MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes, captured Johnson reacting to Democratic Rep. Madeleine Dean’s blunt assessment of Trump’s recent behavior. Dean confronted Johnson after Trump posted an AI-generated video on Truth Social that mocked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries with racist stereotypes, including a sombrero, mariachi music, and a dubbed voice.

“The president is unhinged. He is unwell,” Dean told Johnson in the Capitol hallway.

Johnson’s response was damning in its own right: “A lot of folks on your side are too. I don’t control him…”

While Johnson later attempted to spin the exchange as him merely “listening respectfully,” his words appeared to align him—at least privately—with growing alarm over Trump’s mental state.

Trump, who has faced repeated criticism for racist dog whistles throughout his political career, insisted the AI video was meant as a “joke.” But Democrats—and even some Republicans—were quick to slam it as a dangerous stunt.

Dean told CNN she pressed Johnson on the video directly: “He asked me, like, rhetorically, ‘Is that really racist?’ Yes, it is. It’s really racist, it’s despicable, and he should have called it out.”

Jeffries, the direct target of Trump’s attack, didn’t hold back either. “Mr. President, the next time you have something to say about me, don’t cop out with a racist and fake AI video. The next time I’m back in the Oval Office, say it to my face.”

Publicly, Johnson has tried to brush off the controversy. At a House GOP press conference the following morning, the 53-year-old Speaker attempted to pivot to budget fights and government shutdown threats.

“These are games. These are sideshows,” Johnson said, his tone rising in frustration. “This is not a game. We’ve got to keep the government open for the people.”

But his plea rang hollow after reports surfaced of his private remarks. “To my friend Hakeem,” Johnson added in the presser, “Man, just ignore it.”

The hot mic moment offers a rare glimpse into the uneasy alliance between Trump and Republican leadership. Behind closed doors, even those closest to him appear rattled by his increasingly erratic behavior.

Trump’s recent speeches have only fueled concerns. In one bizarre address to military generals, the president rambled about using the “N-word” and claimed the U.S. was facing an “invasion from within.” Allies abroad have grown nervous, while adversaries openly mock Washington’s instability.

“America’s credibility is on the line,” Rep. Dean said afterward. “Our allies are looking elsewhere. Our enemies are laughing. And the president is clearly unwell.”

For Democrats, the moment underscores what they’ve been warning since Trump reclaimed the Oval Office in 2024: that his second term would be more chaotic, more divisive, and more dangerous than the first.

“This is a man who is supposed to lead the free world,” one Democratic strategist told me. “Instead, he’s playing with AI memes and racist stereotypes. Even Mike Johnson knows this is out of control.”

As the 2026 midterms loom, the cracks in Trump’s Republican wall may become an opening for Democrats. The question now is whether Johnson’s slip was a one-off—or the start of a broader GOP revolt.

  1. Why do republicans fall for the left’s lies? Johnson should know better. The left only knows how to lie. Called saving their own butt right now. The left opens their mouth and lies spew out automatically. Remember they are getting paid to trash republicans. That’s why the all live in DC and in big houses. Wonder how many will be caught before President Trump leaves office. The left just doesn’t get it. Right wins over wrong in so many levels. If you are on the lefts side then you are getting a check from them. That’s a fact. Follow the money.

  2. Johnson did NOT say that President Trump was unhinged. Madeline Dean is the one who made that untrue statement. I am so tired of all the liberal left lies.
