President Donald Trump has vanished from the public stage amid the third government shutdown of his presidency, prompting Democratic leaders to accuse him of “hiding from his own mess.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered the sharpest jab Friday morning, saying the president has gone “radio silent” because he “knows he’s responsible” for the shutdown that’s left hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay.
“Donald Trump is basically in the presidential witness protection program,” Jeffries told Morning Joe on MSNBC. “No one can find him when it comes to the government shutdown because he knows he’s responsible for causing it.”
The shutdown—now in its third day—was triggered by a Republican standoff over spending levels and a controversial Trump-backed proposal to defund several federal agencies tied to climate research and reproductive health programs.
A Familiar Crisis, a Familiar Silence
While Trump has spent much of his presidency staging high-profile photo ops and fiery rallies, his near-absence since Wednesday has drawn national attention. Apart from sporadic Truth Social posts—some featuring AI-generated images mocking Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer—the president has avoided reporters and refrained from addressing the public directly.
The White House insists he’s “working nonstop.” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called Jeffries’ accusation “ridiculous fodder,” telling reporters, “The president is literally working around the clock. He has meetings, briefings, and policy sessions every day. He works 24/7—anyone who covers this White House knows that.”
But the only known photo of Trump since the shutdown began shows him arriving for dinner Thursday night with Senator J.D. Vance and his wife at the Naval Observatory.
Behind Closed Doors with Project 2025’s Architect
Earlier that same day, sources say Trump met privately with Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought—the architect of Project 2025, a sweeping conservative plan to overhaul the federal bureaucracy.
According to two administration aides who spoke on condition of anonymity, Trump and Vought discussed “which Democrat agencies” to shutter during the shutdown. One aide quoted Trump as saying, “This is our chance to reset government from the inside out.”
That statement marks a stunning reversal from his 2024 campaign trail rhetoric, when Trump dismissed Project 2025 as “seriously extreme” and “absolutely ridiculous.”
Democrats Blame “Manufactured Chaos”
Democrats, meanwhile, say Trump is deliberately fueling crisis to pressure Congress into passing partisan spending cuts. “It’s government by tantrum,” said Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.). “The American people are being used as pawns while the president hides behind social media.”
In a late-night statement, Jeffries accused Trump of “governing through spectacle and sabotage,” calling the shutdown “a political stunt that punishes workers and weakens America.”
The White House continues to insist negotiations are “productive.” But as one senior Democrat put it, “If the president’s really working around the clock, he’s doing it behind locked doors.”
Public Reaction: Frustration and Fatigue
Across Washington, shuttered offices and unpaid contractors have reignited memories of Trump’s earlier shutdowns—one in 2018 that lasted 35 days, and another in 2020 that briefly paralyzed federal courts and air travel.
“This feels like déjà vu,” said Janine Garcia, a furloughed EPA employee. “He always promises to drain the swamp, but it’s the people who work hardest for this country who end up drowning.”
Polls released Friday by Gallup show 62% of Americans blame Trump and congressional Republicans for the impasse, while only 24% fault Democrats.
As the shutdown drags on, so does the question haunting Washington: is the president really working behind the scenes—or simply hiding from the consequences of his own administration’s chaos?
