President Donald Trump was supposed to kick off Washington’s massive IndyCar spectacle with a simple wave of the green flag — but the brief ceremonial moment quickly turned into social media ammunition.
Trump, 80, officially started the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, August 23, with First Lady Melania Trump standing beside him. The historic race sent IndyCars roaring through the streets of the nation’s capital as part of America’s 250th birthday celebrations.
But instead of the race itself, some of Trump’s critics became fixated on the way he handled the flag.
Video circulating online showed Trump appearing to initially grab the green flag awkwardly before getting it into position and enthusiastically waving it as the field took off.
Lmao 🤣 they had to tell Donald Trump to hold the green flag the right way! pic.twitter.com/R8T6Xs5ytE

The moment immediately went viral, with Trump detractors ridiculing the president and questioning how he could seemingly get tripped up by such a simple ceremonial task.
One critic joked online that Trump had to be shown how to hold the flag, while others called the scene “embarrassing” and argued that former President Joe Biden would have faced relentless criticism from conservative media over a similar moment.
Supporters saw things very differently.
The White House proudly shared footage of Trump waving the flag, while other viewers praised the president’s enthusiasm and treated the viral moment as little more than Trump having fun at the race. The clip quickly became meme material on both sides of the political divide.
The flag controversy comes as Trump’s critics continue trying to turn seemingly minor public moments into larger questions about his age and fitness for office.
Those attacks intensified recently after Trump was photographed using a briefing card containing information about people he was meeting — something Republicans had repeatedly mocked Biden for doing during his presidency.
Liberal commentator David Pakman seized on the apparent double standard, arguing that conservative commentators once treated similar cards used by Biden as evidence of cognitive decline.
There is no basis, however, to diagnose Trump with dementia or another neurological condition from either the flag video or his use of briefing materials.
Meanwhile, Trump’s flag-waving wasn’t the only thing attracting attention inside the VIP area.
His longtime aide Natalie Harp was also spotted at the race, putting the 35-year-old back in the spotlight after weeks of increasingly intense scrutiny surrounding her relationship with the president.
Harp has become one of Trump’s most recognizable aides, frequently accompanying him and helping manage information and communications.
Her presence has generated particular interest after reports surfaced about deeply personal letters she allegedly wrote to Trump.
In one reported note, Harp told Trump that she wanted to bring him “joy” and thanked him for being her “Guardian and Protector.” Another reportedly described her desire to become a better version of herself who would make the president proud.
The attention surrounding Harp has become so intense that her appearance at the Freedom 250 immediately generated another round of online speculation — particularly because Melania was also there.
Some social media users even claimed footage appeared to show security personnel keeping Harp farther away from Trump while the first lady stood nearby, although the video itself does not establish why people were positioned where they were.
The White House has strongly defended Harp.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has described her as one of the president’s most loyal and hardworking aides, while Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno has blasted some of the attacks against her as misogynistic.
Moreno said Harp is highly capable at her job and argued that the intense speculation surrounding her relationship with Trump would likely not exist if she were a man.
For all the online drama, the race itself delivered exactly the kind of patriotic spectacle Trump has increasingly embraced.
Trump and Melania first rode around the course in the presidential limousine known as “The Beast” before the president waved the green flag. The race featured military pageantry and took drivers through a specially constructed course around some of Washington’s most famous landmarks.
American driver Kyle Kirkwood ultimately won the 250-mile race.
But online, Trump’s awkward few seconds with the green flag may have generated nearly as much conversation as the cars speeding past him.

This is a ridiculous article, even by Next Gen News’s usual rock bottom Trump-bashing standards. If anyone wants to make a big deal about this moment, let’s judge the previous president by the same standards, like when he wandered off into the jungle after a speech, the numerous times he could barely manage reading off a teleprompter, or tripped over his own two feet. If we play by the same rules, as NGN never does, Trump would emerge as more mentally and physically competent EVERY TIME.
Yes, Trump started the race by riding the course in The Beast… then finally waving the flag when instructed to…
Evil NextGen/LSM need to stop trying to throw a pall over Natalie Harp’s wedding next month!
The trained bald eagle flying over was so cool !!
