French President Emmanuel Macron found himself trapped in New York gridlock on Monday—and the culprit was none other than President Donald Trump’s sprawling motorcade.

The surreal moment unfolded as Macron’s car got wedged behind barricades near the United Nations General Assembly. Instead of stewing in silence, the French leader jumped out, strolled over to police, and cracked a joke: “If you don’t see, let me pass.”

The officer could only shrug. “Everything is closed for the president’s motorcade,” he explained, apologetically.

So Macron dialed Trump directly. “Hey, how are you? Guess what—I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you!” Macron laughed into the phone, according to video clips now ricocheting across TikTok and X.

As Trump’s convoy—often more than a dozen black SUVs long—snaked through Manhattan, Macron killed time with selfies, handshakes, and even a surprise kiss from a passerby.

“It’s not every day you see the French president walking down 2nd Avenue like a tourist,” one onlooker joked.

A Lighthearted Scene With Heavy Politics Behind It

The comic interlude masked a far deeper rift between the two leaders. Only hours before the traffic jam, Macron stunned the UN by announcing France would officially recognize Palestine as a state.

“Nothing, nothing justifies the continuation of the war in Gaza,” Macron declared in a fiery speech, directly rebuking Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and implicitly challenging Trump’s Middle East stance.

The move put Paris on a collision course with Washington. Trump has repeatedly blasted Macron’s plan as “a reward to Hamas” and insisted it will “never change a thing.”

“He’s a good guy and I like him,” Trump said earlier this week. “But his statement doesn’t carry any weight.”

UN Summit: Clashing Visions of the World

Macron’s recognition of Palestine marks one of the boldest breaks by a U.S. ally during Trump’s presidency. Analysts say it could isolate America further at the UN, where many members have already criticized Trump’s hardline positions.

On Tuesday, Trump is set to address the General Assembly, promising a scorched-earth attack on “globalist institutions.” According to the White House, he will claim these bodies have “significantly decayed the world order” and argue that only strong nation-states can restore stability.

For Macron, the traffic jam may have been a fleeting inconvenience. But politically, his collision with Trump’s motorcade was an almost perfect metaphor: Europe’s vision for multilateralism stopped cold by the American president’s outsized presence.

“History will remember this moment,” said one European diplomat. “Macron was literally stuck in Trump’s lane.”
