Milo Yiannopoulos Deported After Years of Cheering Immigration Crackdowns

Far-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos has reportedly been deported from the United States — an extraordinary twist for a political firebrand who spent years backing hard-line immigration policies and celebrating deportations.

The former Breitbart News editor was removed from the country Friday after being taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier in the week, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

A DHS spokesperson told Newsweek that Yiannopoulos, a British citizen, was considered “an illegal alien from the United Kingdom” and had been sent back to his home country.

Yiannopoulos was arrested by ICE officers at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, Louisiana.

According to DHS, the controversial commentator originally entered the United States legally through New York City on May 14, 2019.

But officials said he remained in the country beyond the period he was authorized to stay.

“He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws,” the DHS spokesperson said.

The deportation marks a stunning turn for Yiannopoulos, who became one of the most recognizable figures on the far-right during the rise of Donald Trump.

Yiannopoulos built his reputation through provocative speeches, inflammatory political commentary and fierce attacks on liberals, immigration advocates and political correctness.

He previously worked as an editor at Breitbart News and later became associated with rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West.

But his removal from the country is likely to draw particular attention because of his longtime support for strict immigration enforcement.

The outspoken conservative had repeatedly aligned himself with political movements demanding tougher treatment of undocumented immigrants and stronger deportation policies.

Now, Yiannopoulos has found himself on the receiving end of the very immigration system he once enthusiastically defended.

DHS did not immediately provide additional details about the circumstances leading up to his arrest or whether Yiannopoulos attempted to challenge his removal.

For a political personality who spent years courting controversy, however, his latest headline may be one of the most ironic yet.
