CNN has been dealt another high-profile departure, with veteran anchor Bianna Golodryga walking away from the network after nine years, just days after another of its biggest names announced plans to leave.
The 48-year-old journalist confirmed her surprise exit on Thursday, October 22, revealing that an unexpected career opportunity had convinced her to move on. Her announcement came at a particularly sensitive time for CNN, which is adjusting to new ownership and facing questions about what its future could look like.
“After nine wonderful years at CNN, I’ve decided to leave for an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” Golodryga wrote on X, thanking her colleagues for their friendship and support before teasing, “Exciting news to share very soon!”
But while Golodryga initially kept her next move a mystery, reports quickly emerged suggesting she could be preparing for not one, but two major jobs.
According to Variety, the longtime broadcaster has been in discussions with Politico about covering global affairs while also exploring a possible contributor position at CBS News. Sources familiar with the negotiations cautioned that the arrangements had not been finalized, leaving open the possibility that one or both deals could fall through.
Such an arrangement would allow Golodryga to work for two major news organizations simultaneously, something she has experience doing. Before joining CNN full-time, she co-anchored CBS This Morning while maintaining a role with CNN.
Her departure became especially emotional during her final CNN broadcast on Friday, October 23, when colleagues paid tribute to the journalist and her co-anchor, Zain Asher, struggled with the thought of saying goodbye.
Golodryga acknowledged that leaving had been an incredibly difficult decision, despite receiving what she described as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Asher became visibly emotional during the farewell, telling Golodryga that she was more than simply a television colleague. At one point, she surprised the departing anchor with cupcakes, bringing a touching conclusion to their years working together.
CNN personalities Jake Tapper and Harry Enten also joined in the send-off, with Tapper praising Golodryga’s reporting and friendship while Enten delivered a humorous prerecorded tribute.
The emotional goodbye came just four days after CNN chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour stunned viewers with an announcement of her own.
Amanpour, 68, revealed on October 19 that she would leave CNN in June 2027, ending an extraordinary 43-year relationship with the network. The celebrated foreign correspondent plans to end her daily CNN and PBS programming in December before continuing with a weekly CNN International broadcast through May.
Together, the two announcements represent a significant changing of the guard for CNN’s international coverage, with two recognizable journalists preparing for new chapters within days of each other.
The timing is particularly striking because CNN has recently undergone one of the most consequential ownership changes in its history.
Earlier in October, Paramount Skydance completed its approximately $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing CNN and CBS News under the same corporate umbrella.
The massive deal has raised questions about how the two competing news organizations will operate under billionaire media executive David Ellison. Although Ellison has publicly pledged to protect CNN’s editorial independence, the possibility of future consolidation has created uncertainty over the network’s long-term direction.
CNN chief Mark Thompson is remaining in charge of the network, while CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss continues overseeing CBS’s news operations. For now, the two outlets retain separate editorial leadership.
Neither Golodryga nor Amanpour has publicly identified the ownership change as the reason for leaving, and there is no confirmed evidence that their decisions were connected.
For Golodryga, the departure marks another major turning point in a television career spanning more than two decades.
Born in the former Soviet Union, she arrived in the United States as a young refugee and grew up in Houston, Texas. She eventually built a career covering financial markets, international affairs and major breaking news events, working for CNBC, ABC News, Yahoo and CBS before establishing herself at CNN.
She first joined CNN as a contributor in 2017 and became a full-time senior global affairs analyst in 2019. More recently, she co-anchored CNN International’s One World alongside Asher and regularly filled in for prominent hosts, including Amanpour and Fareed Zakaria.
Outside television, Golodryga also co-authored the 2025 children’s novel Don’t Feed the Lion with Israeli journalist Yonit Levi. The book explores antisemitism and encourages families to confront prejudice through meaningful conversations.
Despite her decision to leave, Golodryga made clear during her final broadcast that she remains proud of her former colleagues and the journalism they produce.
Asher will continue anchoring One World, although CNN has not announced whether a permanent replacement will join her.
With two prominent international anchors heading for the exits, a powerful new owner overseeing the network and Golodryga teasing a major career announcement, CNN is entering a period of substantial change.
For now, the biggest unanswered question is where Golodryga will appear next — and whether her departure is simply a new professional opportunity or one of the first visible changes in a much larger transformation of the television news industry.
