NBA superstar Ja Morant is back in the headlines—this time not for his game-winning shot, but for ignoring league warnings and flashing imaginary guns on national TV.

The Memphis Grizzlies point guard was fined $75,000 on Friday after mimicking gunfire following several three-point shots during Thursday night’s game against the Miami Heat. The penalty came just days after he was explicitly warned by the NBA to stop.

This isn’t a one-time slip-up. It’s part of a troubling pattern.

A Repeat Offender, Ignoring Warnings

Morant, a two-time All-Star, was already under the league’s microscope. In 2023, he served two separate suspensions over real firearm incidents—one where he waved a gun at a nightclub while intoxicated during an Instagram Live, and another where he was again caught on a live stream brandishing a weapon in a car. Combined, the bans cost him 33 games and over $8 million in salary.

Despite that history—and despite the NBA’s recent warning—Morant used the same gesture twice during Thursday’s game. He turned toward the bench, extended one arm like a barrel, with his thumb up and fingers aimed forward. The message? Loud and clear.

“This is not about celebration,” one league insider told us anonymously. “It’s about optics. This is a player who’s already been suspended for glamorizing guns, ignoring direct instructions from the NBA.”

The league’s official statement Friday described the gesture as “inappropriate” and “negatively interpreted.” They made clear Morant had been warned earlier in the week—but chose to keep doing it anyway.

“I Don’t Care No More” — Morant Embraces the Villain Role

After sinking a buzzer-beater that secured the Grizzlies’ win over the Heat, Morant was asked about the continued criticism.

“I’m kind of used to it,” he told reporters. “I was pretty much a villain for two years now. Every little thing, if somebody can say something negative about me, it’s going to be out there. So, yeah. I don’t care no more.”

That defiant attitude may appeal to diehard fans, but it’s raising alarms inside a league already battling to keep its image clean amid rising concerns about violence, particularly involving young Black men and firearms.

NBA Trying to Set a Tone in Post-Trump Era

The NBA has worked hard to position itself as a socially conscious league—especially in the aftermath of Trump-era politics that polarized sports audiences. During the Trump years, NBA players were vocal critics of gun violence, police brutality, and political extremism.

Morant’s actions, critics say, cut against that progress.

“Ja Morant is too talented and too influential to be this reckless,” said Rev. Mark Daniels, a Memphis-based youth counselor. “Millions of kids are watching him—many of them in communities where gun violence is a daily threat. This isn’t just a celebration. It’s a message, and it’s the wrong one.”

What’s Next for Morant and the League?

The Grizzlies are set to face the Detroit Pistons on Saturday, but questions are swirling around how far the league is willing to let Morant push the line.

Will another fine stop him? Or is the NBA staring down another high-profile suspension?

One thing is clear: Ja Morant may be one of the NBA’s most electric players—but he’s also becoming its most volatile brand. And the league, already weary from image battles of the past decade, may have to choose between protecting one of its biggest stars—or protecting the message it claims to stand for.

  1. THAT IS APPROPRIATE!!  We do NOT need anybody glorifying guns, except the hunters!!! Dr. Schlatter

    1. Well, it’s solid fact that guns save lives so why wouldn’t we appreciate them? We just don’t need kids and criminals running around with them but the libbies don’t want to actually put them in jail or anything.

  2. So does the league do any real work on keeping real guns out of the hands of kids? Hmmmm, not that I’ve heard of. What a bunch of liberal sissies!!
