Derrick Harmon’s biggest night turned into his most devastating.

Just hours after hearing his name called as the 21st overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the former Oregon Ducks defensive tackle lost his mother, Tiffany Saine, who had been on life support, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

In an emotional press conference, Harmon shared that he was able to visit Tiffany at the hospital before she passed — giving her the incredible news that he had made it to the NFL, fulfilling the dream she had encouraged him to chase.

The Detroit native called the moment “bittersweet,” wishing his mom could have been there to celebrate with him in Green Bay.

“We are excited to select Derrick in the first round of the NFL Draft, but our hearts are heavy as we mourn the death of his mother,” Steelers owner Art Rooney II said Friday. “We’ll support Derrick and his family however we can during this heartbreaking time. We hope he finds comfort in the love from the organization and from Steelers fans everywhere.”

Just before the draft, Harmon shared a raw, emotional Instagram Story with a photo of him and his mom. The caption: “This is all for you!!! and I’m do what you told me I can do a long time ago. I love you till the wheels fall off !!!!”

Derrick’s bond with his mother ran deep. Growing up, Tiffany endured about eight brain surgeries, Harmon revealed to ESPN. She suffered a stroke while he was a freshman at Michigan State — a pivotal moment that fueled his drive. In his senior year, Harmon used his NIL earnings to buy her an accessible van, ensuring she could travel comfortably after her health struggles.

When it came time for the Steelers to pick at No. 21, many expected them to go for a quarterback — especially with Aaron Rodgers still stringing the league along. But head coach Mike Tomlin made it clear the team had bigger priorities.

“To be quite honest with you, there’s no substitute for young talent,” Tomlin told reporters. “You don’t build a dominant defense unless you’re strong up front. Derrick has a chance to learn from greats like Cam Heyward — and he’s got what it takes to be a major force for years to come.”

Harmon’s journey to this point wasn’t easy. After three seasons at Michigan State, where he stayed close to home to support his mom, he transferred to Oregon. There, he racked up five sacks, 11 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and helped lead the Ducks to a conference championship and a No. 1 overall seed. His performance earned him second-team All-Big Ten honors — and now, a first-round NFL future.

But for Harmon, this night wasn’t just about football. It was about honoring the woman who believed in him first — and forever.

  1. THAT IS OK. SHE WILL BE WATCHING OVER YOU. JUST STAY OUT OF TROUBLE AND PRAY EVERY NIGHT BEFORE YOU GO TO BED.
