A Florida family is reeling after a mother and her 2-year-old daughter were killed in a horrifying lightning strike that left the pair lying on a sidewalk during a weekend storm.
Kenya Glasgow, 31, and her young daughter, Kennedi, were struck by lightning Sunday afternoon, Aug. 23, in Margate, Florida.
Police and fire crews rushed to the area near 7900 Northwest First Street at about 2:30 p.m. after receiving reports that two people had been struck and were lying motionless on the sidewalk.
First responders immediately began performing CPR before rushing both victims to separate hospitals.
Glasgow was transported to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach, while Kennedi was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.
Tragically, both were pronounced dead.
A nearby resident, Prince Moody, described the terrifying moment the lightning bolt hit, saying the blast was impossible to miss.
He recalled hearing an unbelievably loud lightning strike followed by thunder, while an orange flash lit up his window.
The horrifying scene quickly turned heartbreaking once neighbors realized a mother and her little girl had been struck.
“Imagine the family that’s actually going through this,” Moody told WPLG, adding that as a father himself, he could hardly comprehend the loss.
But the most devastating words came from Glasgow’s husband, Kam, who posted an emotional tribute to his wife and daughter following their deaths.
“I just lost my best friend. My daughter just lost her best friend,” he wrote.
Kam said the tragedy has left the surviving family shattered, but he is trying to find strength in his faith.
“My babies didn’t suffer,” he wrote, explaining that after losing his own father several years ago, he learned not to question God.
He also urged everyone who knew Kenya and Kennedi to remember the love they brought into the lives of those around them.
“I’m hurt, we are hurt, but if you gotten the chance to feel that beautiful light my wife and daughter brought into your life cherish it,” he wrote. “It gives us all the blueprint to just love others and always remember it doesn’t take much to be kind.”
Photos shared by Kam showed Kennedi with her sister, Kensli, who is now facing life without her mother and sibling.
Kam ended his tribute with a heartbreaking message directly to the two people he lost.
“Kenya Kennedi I Love You Both So Much. I Thank You Both For Choosing Me As Your Husband And Father,” he wrote.
He promised that he and Kensli would keep going while carrying their memory with them.
“Don’t worry about Kensli and I,” he added. “I know you both have us covered for the rest of our lives.”
The freak tragedy has stunned the Margate community, turning an ordinary summer storm into an unimaginable family nightmare.
