Most people celebrate their birthdays with cake, candles, and family gatherings. But for 104-year-old Loretta, her wish was far from ordinary—she wanted to experience life behind bars.

Loretta, a resident of a Finger Lakes nursing home in New York, has lived a long and fulfilling life. Yet, there was one thing she had never done: go to jail. When asked how she wanted to mark her milestone birthday, her answer was simple: “I want to see what it’s like inside.”

Sheriff Tom Dougherty of Livingston County recalled the unusual request. “We don’t get many birthday wishes like this, but when we heard what she wanted, we knew we had to make it happen.”

On February 8, officers at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office welcomed Loretta with open arms—and a set of handcuffs, just for fun.

A Day in Jail—By Request

The birthday celebration included all the hallmarks of a real jail experience—minus the crime. Loretta had her mugshot taken, got fingerprinted, and even spent time inside a holding cell. But unlike typical inmates, she was treated to cake and coffee with the officers.

“She was a great sport about everything,” the sheriff’s office shared in a Facebook post. “We love making people smile, and today, Loretta gave us that opportunity.”

As part of the festivities, Loretta also met one of the department’s new K-9 officers, an experience she described as the highlight of her day.

A Life Well-Lived

Loretta’s story is a rare one. According to U.S. Census data, only 0.03% of Americans reach the age of 100, making her part of an elite group of centenarians. Even more exclusive is the title of the oldest living American, which currently belongs to 114-year-old Naomi Whitehead of Georgia.

When asked about the secret to her long life, Loretta didn’t hesitate. “Mind your business!” she said with a laugh.

Her nursing home, Hurlburt Care Communities, expressed gratitude to the sheriff’s office for making the unconventional birthday wish come true. “Thank you for all the laughs and for giving Loretta a day she’ll never forget,” they shared on social media.

Loretta’s jailhouse visit serves as a reminder that adventure doesn’t have an expiration date. At 104, she’s still checking off her bucket list—and doing it with style.
