Tragedy struck on Wilson Lake in Alabama Saturday, Oct. 12, when a fishing boat was pulled into the generators of a nearby dam, flipping the vessel and killing one of its occupants. Alabama authorities have confirmed the incident.
Dennis Neal, 72, was aboard the 1977 Hurricane fishing boat with a 14-year-old boy and a 44-year-old man when the boat’s trolling motor malfunctioned, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Division. Without power, the boat was drawn into the Wheeler Dam’s generators and overturned, throwing all three into the water. None were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident, authorities reported.
Rescue teams quickly responded to the scene. Local and state officials managed to save the teenager and the adult man, finding them trapped between two turbines. Sadly, Neal’s body was later recovered nearby. All three individuals were from Lewisburg, Tennessee.
Boating safety experts continue to urge caution when navigating near dams. According to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, “Dangerous currents above the dam can draw boats into water going over or through a dam. If boaters lose power upstream of a dam or find themselves drifting, they should immediately deploy an anchor to hold their position.”
Wilson Lake, located on the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama, is formed by two dams, including the Wheeler Dam, where this tragic accident occurred.
