Frank Fritz, beloved co-star of American Pickers, passed away on September 30, leaving fans and friends mourning the loss of a man who made forgotten treasures and roadside oddities come alive on screen.
After battling numerous health issues in recent years, Fritz’s passing has shed light on the immense personal challenges he faced—both physically and emotionally.
Fritz was best known for his role alongside Mike Wolfe and Danielle Colby in American Pickers, a reality show that turned forgotten gems from dusty basements and cluttered garages into reclaimed treasures. Together, the trio traveled across America, uncovering quirky stories behind every find and sharing their passion for vintage Americana. Fritz was a part of the show from 2010 to 2020, before stepping away due to health complications.
According to reports, Fritz died due to complications from a stroke while in hospice care. In 2022, he suffered a debilitating stroke that left him in a wheelchair, drastically impacting his quality of life. He had also struggled for decades with Crohn’s disease, a painful inflammatory bowel condition that causes severe digestive issues. Despite these challenges, those close to him remember his resilience and passion for his work.
One of Fritz’s close friends, Jerry Gendreau, recently opened up about the TV star’s struggles in the final months of his life, offering insight into the toll his health issues took on his spirit.
In an interview with The U.S. Sun, Gendreau shared how Fritz’s health had declined to the point that he had become bedridden. “He felt really, really bad. You would go to see him in the nursing home… and one half of his body was completely done. He’d lift his arm up, and it would just drop. That’s got to be tough, to be totally bedridden.”
Gendreau also spoke to the emotional weight Fritz carried, particularly in his inability to communicate as freely as he once had. “He was frustrated because he couldn’t say what he wanted to say,” Gendreau said. “I think if you don’t have the will to live, you won’t. I think he could’ve lived a lot longer if the will to live would’ve been there.”
Rumors have swirled about tensions between Fritz and his longtime friend and co-host Mike Wolfe. However, Wolfe’s partner, Leticia Cline, took to social media to refute claims that Wolfe had abandoned Fritz during his difficult years. In an Instagram story, Cline wrote, “For the past 3 years I have been a witness to how Mike has done everything possible to make sure Frank has had the best care.” She revealed that Wolfe had been by Fritz’s side during his final moments, demonstrating the bond of friendship that endured behind the scenes.
On October 1, Wolfe confirmed Fritz’s passing with a heartfelt Instagram post that reflected on their years of friendship and shared adventures. “It’s with a broken heart that I share with all of you that Frank passed away last night,” he wrote. “I’ve known Frank for more than half my life… a dreamer who was just as sensitive as he was funny.”
Wolfe’s tribute to Fritz recalled the early days of their friendship, long before American Pickers became a cultural phenomenon. “Before the show, we would take off together to places we never knew existed with no destination in mind,” Wolfe reminisced. “I feel blessed that I was there by his side when he took one last journey home.”
Frank Fritz’s passing has left a void in the hearts of his fans and loved ones. His tenacity in the face of illness, and his passion for unearthing pieces of history, are legacies that will be remembered by all who watched his journey unfold.
In a world that can feel overwhelmingly fast-paced and disposable, Fritz reminded us that there is beauty in the old, the forgotten, and the overlooked—and for that, he will always be cherished.
