‘The View’ Rejects Rosie O’Donnell After Former Host Eyes Return

Rosie O’Donnell may have spoken too soon about a possible return to The View — and now insiders claim her big announcement has thrown ABC into an awkward behind-the-scenes scramble.

The former co-host recently suggested she would be back for the daytime show’s 30th anniversary celebration, but according to a new report, no official invitation had actually been finalized.

“Nothing has been officially confirmed,” a senior television insider told gossip columnist Rob Shuter for his Naughty But Nice Substack.

“There have been conversations, but those conversations were supposed to remain confidential. Rosie’s announcing it has complicated things.”

O’Donnell’s representative also appeared to pump the brakes on the comeback chatter, confirming that there had been discussion about bringing former hosts back for the milestone anniversary but saying no formal offer had been made.

“There was a mention of inviting some of the hosts back to The View,” the rep said. “There has not been a formal ask from the show at this time.”

That makes O’Donnell’s possible return especially intriguing given her famously turbulent history with the ABC program.

The outspoken comedian first joined The View in 2006 and quickly became one of the show’s most talked-about personalities, frequently clashing with conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck during heated political debates.

Their feud exploded on-air in 2007, and O’Donnell ultimately walked away from the show earlier than expected.

She returned years later, only to find herself at odds with longtime moderator Whoopi Goldberg.

O’Donnell has since been remarkably candid about just how unhappy she was during parts of her time on the program.

During a 2023 appearance on Brooke Shields’ Now What? podcast, O’Donnell recalled feeling betrayed during her showdown with Hasselbeck.

“One day on the show she kind of threw me under the bus,” O’Donnell said, adding that she finished the broadcast, grabbed her coat and decided she was done.

She said her second stint was hardly smoother.

“When they asked me to come back and Whoopi was on it, we clashed in ways that I was shocked by,” she said.

O’Donnell went even further, saying the combative format simply was not a good fit for her.

“It’s not the best use of my talent to get in a show where I have to argue and defend basic principles of humanity and kindness,” she said, adding at the time that returning was “not something I’d ever do again.”

That history is part of what makes the latest reunion talk so surprising.

Former View co-host Michelle Collins has also raised questions about the possibility of O’Donnell returning after publicly criticizing the program.

Collins, who left the show in 2016, said she never publicly trashed the program after her departure because she believed staying quiet was the professional thing to do.

Still, television executives have one powerful reason to consider putting O’Donnell back at the Hot Topics table: ratings.

Her years on The View were unpredictable, controversial and often impossible to ignore — exactly the kind of television that can generate headlines and viral clips.

“Think of the ratings,” one insider reportedly said.

And with O’Donnell remaining an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and a highly polarizing political figure in her own right, even a one-day reunion could instantly reignite the political fireworks that helped define her original tenure.

For now, however, viewers should not count on seeing Rosie back alongside Whoopi just yet.

Despite the public excitement — and the potential ratings bonanza — reports indicate that no deal has been finalized, leaving one of The View’s most explosive former personalities waiting to find out whether ABC actually wants her back.
