When the Los Angeles Dodgers take the field this Thursday for their first regular-season game in the United States, they won’t have their longtime play-by-play commentator calling all the action.

Charley Steiner has been calling Dodgers games for nearly two decades. Unfortunately, he’s officially out for this year’s Opening Day.

Steiner suffered three compound fractures in his back during the winter. As a result, he’s not ready to return to the broadcast booth.

The Dodgers released a statement on Steiner’s behalf this Wednesday.

“Over the winter, I landed on the injured list with three compound fractures in my back. (I don’t recommend it.) With the start of the baseball season upon us, the Dodgers are ready to go, but I’m not,” Steiner said. “This will be the first opening day that I’ve missed since 1976 when I wore a younger man’s clothes. I look forward to returning to the mic later this season. In the meantime, go Dodgers!”

Tim Neverett and Rick Monday handled last week’s games in South Korea between the Dodgers and Padres.

Dodgers fans should expect to hear Neverett and Monday in the booth until further notice. In the meantime, they’re wishing Steiner a speedy recovery.

First pitch for the Cardinals-Dodgers game is set for 4:10 p.m. ET.
