Bob Dylan has never been one to follow the rules, and his latest appearance at the Vatican proved that even a meeting with the pope wasn’t going to change his signature style.
The 85-year-old music legend raised eyebrows Wednesday, November 4, when he arrived for a private audience with Pope Leo XIV wearing a black hoodie pulled over his head, a dark coat and leather gloves. The unexpected encounter came just three weeks after the 71-year-old pontiff underwent surgery for lung cancer.
Photographs released by the Vatican captured the unusual scene inside the lavish Apostolic Palace. While Pope Leo wore his traditional white papal attire, Dylan looked ready to brave a chilly afternoon, even carrying a black umbrella. The notoriously private singer kept his hood up throughout the visit, although he removed his gloves to shake the pope’s hand.
Despite their dramatically different appearances, the two appeared to enjoy a friendly exchange. According to Vatican reports, Leo presented Dylan with a rosary, while the Nobel Prize-winning musician gave the pontiff a signed copy of his autobiography, Chronicles: Volume One.
The meeting was arranged with help from Rev. Antonio Spadaro, a Jesuit priest and Vatican official known for connecting the Catholic Church with influential cultural figures. Spadaro later described the encounter as an emotional moment that felt historic.
But the meeting wasn’t simply a celebrity photo opportunity. Pope Leo, a Chicago native, has long admired Dylan’s music, particularly his outspoken opposition to war and nuclear weapons.
In July, the pontiff quoted Dylan’s little-known 1963 anti-nuclear protest song, “Go Away You Bomb,” in a book addressing peace and disarmament. The connection reflects a shared concern about the devastating consequences of war at a time when global tensions and nuclear threats remain pressing issues.
This also wasn’t Dylan’s first encounter with a pope. In 1997, he performed before Pope John Paul II during a massive Catholic gathering in Bologna, Italy, attended by approximately 300,000 people. The late pontiff even referenced Dylan’s classic “Blowin’ in the Wind” while addressing the crowd.
Wednesday’s meeting carried additional significance because of Pope Leo’s recent health battle. The pontiff underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 13 after doctors discovered a suspicious growth in his right lung. Subsequent testing confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer.
In an encouraging update on October 21, Vatican officials announced that the cancer had been localized and removed, with doctors determining that no additional treatment was necessary.
For Dylan, who was in Italy for his ongoing “Rough and Rowdy Ways” tour, the Vatican visit offered another memorable moment in a career spanning more than six decades.
And while his unconventional outfit may have attracted the most attention, the meeting ultimately brought together two influential Americans whose shared interest in peace stretches far beyond the walls of the Vatican.
