Just days after voters handed President Donald Trump and Republicans a devastating midterm election defeat, first lady Melania Trump is stepping back into the spotlight with a glossy new television series—and its dramatic Hollywood-style trailer is already raising eyebrows.
Amazon Prime Video unveiled the first look at Melania, The Series on Friday, November 6, announcing that the two-part documentary will premiere November 20. The timing comes as the Trump administration faces a political reckoning following Democratic victories that flipped control of both chambers of Congress.
But while Republicans grapple with the election fallout, Melania, 56, appears to be preparing for another red-carpet moment.
The trailer features the first lady sporting oversized dark sunglasses, traveling aboard Air Force One and walking through luxurious surroundings as dramatic music plays. Police sirens, footage of disaster-stricken communities and sweeping shots of American landmarks add an almost action-movie atmosphere to what is supposed to be an intimate look at her life.
“Everybody wants to be close to power,” Melania warns in the preview, suggesting that such proximity can be dangerous.
In another moment, she declares, “I’m a mother, a wife, also first lady,” while dismissing media gossip as little more than noise.
Amazon promises the series will reveal previously unseen moments from Melania’s return to the White House following Trump’s January 2025 inauguration.
The first episode, “Family & Trust,” explores her personal priorities and the challenges of protecting those closest to her while navigating political power. The second, “Pride & Honor,” focuses on her responsibilities and initiatives as first lady.
However, the new production arrives with considerable baggage.
Melania’s original documentary, released in January, became one of the year’s most polarizing films. Critics gave it a dismal 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although verified audience reviews were overwhelmingly positive.
The film also generated approximately $16.6 million worldwide at the box office, a modest return compared with Amazon’s reported $75 million investment in acquiring and promoting the project.
That enormous financial commitment has already attracted scrutiny from Democratic lawmakers.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia questioned whether Amazon’s lucrative arrangement with the first lady represented a potential attempt to gain favor with her husband’s administration.
The lawmakers raised concerns about the reported $40 million rights deal and $35 million marketing campaign, particularly as Amazon has significant business interests affected by federal government decisions.
Amazon has denied improper conduct, maintaining that the deal followed a competitive bidding process and was justified by the project’s cultural and historical significance. No bribery finding has been established.
Despite the controversy, Amazon is celebrating the original film as a historic success and bringing back director Brett Ratner for both episodes of the follow-up series. Melania herself also serves as an executive producer.
For the first lady, the production offers another opportunity to tell her story on her own terms. For critics of the Trump administration, however, the expensive new project is likely to revive uncomfortable questions about money, political influence and the increasingly blurred lines between the White House and Hollywood.
And with Democrats celebrating their election victories, the contrast could hardly be more striking: Republicans are dealing with a political defeat while the first lady prepares for another star-studded premiere.

I didn’t know she could smile… or is that an A.I. picture?
