President Donald Trump and his Republican allies spent the final days of the midterm campaign attacking Barack Obama over a joke about the Cheesecake Factory. But when voters headed to the polls, it was the former president who appeared to get the last laugh.
In a remarkable twist, Democrats won more than 70 percent of congressional districts containing a Cheesecake Factory restaurant, delivering an embarrassing conclusion to a political controversy Republicans had tried to turn into a symbol of Democratic elitism.
According to an analysis by The Bulwark, Democrats had secured at least 124 of the 171 House districts containing one of the restaurant chain’s locations by late Thursday. Republicans had won just 42, with five races still undecided.
Perhaps even more striking, Republicans had not flipped a single Democratic-held district containing a Cheesecake Factory, despite the party’s highly publicized effort to portray Obama as out of touch with ordinary Americans.
The bizarre political showdown began October 24, when Obama mocked Trump’s extravagant White House renovations during a campaign rally in Cleveland, Ohio.
“What’s with all the gold? He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened up a Cheesecake Factory,” Obama joked, drawing laughter from the crowd.
Trump and his allies quickly seized on the remark, arguing that Obama had insulted a popular restaurant chain enjoyed by millions of Americans. But the former president’s joke was aimed at Trump’s decorating choices, not the people who eat at the restaurant.
Trump personally defended the chain, describing it as a successful company while insisting that his White House renovations were necessary to maintain the building’s appearance.
The White House even released a mock Cheesecake Factory menu, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited one of the restaurants and suggested that wealthy residents of Martha’s Vineyard follow his example.
Vice President JD Vance also joined the controversy, accusing Obama of being “super elitist” during a Fox News town hall.
Republican strategist Matt Whitlock similarly suggested that Cheesecake Factory was a great option for Americans who could not afford a private chef at a Martha’s Vineyard estate, a pointed reference to Obama’s vacation home.
But Obama wasn’t backing down.
At another campaign appearance, the former president ridiculed the administration for devoting so much attention to his joke while Americans struggled with rising prices.
“They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke,” Obama said.
Just days later, voters delivered a crushing setback to Trump’s party.
Democrats swept back into control of both the House and Senate, flipping seven Republican-held Senate seats and scoring stunning victories in traditionally conservative states, including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina.
The Cheesecake Factory numbers added an especially ironic footnote to the Republican defeat.
The Bulwark identified 215 restaurant locations nationwide, spread across 171 congressional districts under the maps used in the 2026 election. By Thursday night, Democrats had won districts containing 159 of those restaurants, compared with 50 in Republican-won districts. Six locations remained in districts with unresolved races.
The figures do not prove that Obama’s joke influenced voters. Restaurant locations are also concentrated in metropolitan and suburban areas, many of which already favor Democrats. Nevertheless, the results offered little support for Republican claims that the controversy would expose a politically damaging divide between Democrats and middle-class Americans.
More broadly, the election suggested voters were far more concerned about their finances than a former president’s restaurant joke.
According to election surveys, frustration over the cost of living, Trump’s tariffs and the war with Iran helped fuel the Democratic wave, overwhelming Republican efforts to shift attention toward cultural controversies and attacks on Democratic candidates.
Obama celebrated the results in a post on X, declaring that Americans wanted leaders who could bring people together and offer real solutions to their problems.
He also warned that Democrats now faced the responsibility of delivering meaningful change during Trump’s remaining two years in office.
The political consequences are significant. With Democrats taking control of Congress in January, Trump faces a substantially more difficult path for his legislative agenda, along with the possibility of increased congressional investigations and oversight.
As for the Cheesecake Factory controversy, the restaurant chain was never actually on the ballot. But after days of Republican outrage, Obama’s punchline has taken on an entirely new meaning.
Trump’s allies tried to turn a joke about gold-plated White House decor into a political weapon against Democrats. Instead, election night served up a result they almost certainly weren’t hoping to see.
