Hollywood actor and longtime Donald Trump supporter James Woods is unleashing his fury on Republicans after Democrats delivered a devastating midterm election defeat, seizing control of both chambers of Congress and leaving the GOP facing a bitter political reckoning.

But while some Republicans are questioning the president’s leadership, Woods is pointing the finger elsewhere — and his anger appears aimed squarely at the party’s own lawmakers.

The 79-year-old actor, known for his outspoken conservative views, took to X following Tuesday’s November 3 elections with a blistering message for Republicans he believes helped hand Democrats their stunning victory.

“Congratulations to all the Democrat victors tonight, and to all the lazy, worthless Republicans who let it happen,” Woods wrote.

Adding to the sting, Woods accompanied his message with a photograph of Senate Majority Leader John Thune, making clear that Republican leadership was at the center of his frustration.

The furious outburst came as Democrats celebrated a remarkable political comeback, winning majorities in both the House and Senate and flipping Senate seats in traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina.

The results dealt a serious blow to Trump’s political agenda, setting the stage for two years of Democratic control on Capitol Hill during the remainder of his presidency.

Yet Woods’ attack carried an intriguing twist. Despite his harsh criticism of Republicans, the actor conspicuously avoided blaming Trump himself.

That distinction is especially notable given Woods’ history of defending the president while repeatedly clashing with Republican lawmakers he believes have failed to support his agenda.

In March, Woods had already announced that he was abandoning the Republican Party, accusing congressional leaders of betraying conservative voters.

“I am done with the Republican Party,” he declared at the time.

Woods specifically criticized Thune over the SAVE Act, legislation backed by conservatives that would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

“Between this and Thune’s refusal to pass the SAVE Act, I’m done with these uniparty traitors,” Woods wrote.

He went further, announcing his intention to become an Independent and arguing that Trump was struggling because of opposition within his own party.

His frustration also followed a dispute involving Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, who accused fellow GOP lawmakers of blocking her effort to obtain immigration records related to Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar.

Now, eight months later, Woods’ latest attack suggests his anger toward Republican leadership has only intensified.

But the actor’s explanation for the election disaster differs sharply from that offered by Vice President JD Vance, who delivered his own stunning assessment of the GOP’s defeat.

“The reason we lost is the war,” Vance wrote Wednesday, referring to the Trump administration’s military conflict with Iran.

Vance argued that some Americans who voted for Trump in 2024 had turned against Republicans over the war, rising living costs and frustration with the administration’s priorities.

Trump acknowledged that the Iran conflict played a role in the election results but defended his decision to launch the military campaign, insisting he would make the same choice again.

The competing explanations highlight a growing struggle within Republican circles over who should shoulder responsibility for the party’s losses.

While Woods has trained his anger on congressional Republicans, Vance has pointed directly to a major policy decision made by the Trump administration.

For Republicans, the consequences could be significant. Democrats are preparing to take over congressional committees in January, giving them greater power to investigate the administration, challenge its policies and block parts of the president’s legislative agenda.

Thune, meanwhile, is seeking to remain the Senate’s top Republican even after the GOP lost its majority — a move that could further frustrate conservatives already demanding changes in party leadership.

For now, Woods has offered no indication that he is withdrawing his support for Trump or reconsidering his earlier declaration that he would leave the Republican Party.

His message, however, leaves little doubt about where he believes the blame belongs: with Republicans who, in his view, squandered their opportunity to keep control of Washington.

And as the GOP confronts the fallout from its election-night disaster, Woods’ public condemnation is another sign that the party’s most outspoken supporters are far from united over what went wrong.
