Martha Stewart is stirring up fresh controversy after revealing that a mishap involving “Today” show host Craig Melvin was behind her widely criticized Halloween costume, which portrayed a person experiencing homelessness.

The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul, who has already issued two public statements over the backlash, offered the surprising explanation during a November 3 appearance at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando, Florida.

According to Stewart, the controversy began with an innocent accident on live television that left her scrambling for something to wear to a Halloween party. But her latest account is raising eyebrows because it differs from her original explanation that the costume was intended to raise awareness about homelessness.

The trouble began during the October 30 Halloween broadcast of NBC’s “Today,” when Melvin, dressed as rapper Snoop Dogg, joined Stewart for a cake-decorating segment. While handling chocolate ganache, Melvin accidentally splattered some on her clothing.

Stewart laughed off the incident on air, joking that the real Snoop Dogg would never have done such a thing. Melvin later apologized for getting chocolate on her expensive pants, but Stewart now says the accident created a last-minute wardrobe crisis.

“He spilled chocolate all over my sweater, which I was gonna wear on Halloween night,” Stewart told the Orlando audience, according to footage obtained by TMZ.

When she went to retrieve the sweater before heading to a party, Stewart said she realized it was dirty and had just 10 minutes to find an alternative.

Rather than abandon her plans, she decided to improvise.

“The easiest costume was to get dressed up as, you know, a bum,” Stewart recalled, using a term that has itself drawn criticism.

She explained that after looking in the mirror, she thought she resembled someone who was hungry and homeless. She then made a sign asking for food, completing the outfit that would soon spark a social media firestorm.

On October 31, Stewart shared a photograph of herself wearing ripped jeans, a distressed cardigan, a flannel shirt and a knit cap, with dark makeup smeared across her face to resemble dirt. She held a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”

The image appeared in an Instagram post that also promoted her QVC candle collection, adding another layer to the controversy as critics questioned why a wealthy celebrity would portray someone struggling to survive while advertising merchandise.

The backlash was swift. Social media users accused Stewart of mocking homelessness and poverty at a time when many Americans are struggling with housing costs and financial insecurity.

Others argued that the outfit was especially insensitive coming from one of America’s most recognizable businesswomen. Some supporters, however, defended Stewart, suggesting the outrage was excessive and that the controversy could instead draw attention to the homelessness crisis.

Stewart deleted the photograph, but screenshots continued circulating online.

On November 1, she initially defended the costume, saying it had been intended to bring attention to the serious issue of homelessness. She emphasized her charitable involvement and insisted she had never meant to offend anyone.

That explanation failed to satisfy many critics, prompting Stewart to issue a second, more direct statement later that day.

“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” she wrote on Instagram, acknowledging that her earlier response had not gone far enough.

“I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”

Now, her latest account has added another unexpected twist to the controversy.

While Stewart originally described the outfit as an attempt to raise awareness, her remarks in Orlando portrayed it as a spontaneous decision made after Melvin’s chocolate spill. The two explanations are not necessarily incompatible, but the change in emphasis has prompted additional scrutiny.

Melvin’s involvement was accidental, and there is no indication he had anything to do with Stewart’s decision to portray a homeless person.

For Stewart, who built a multimillion-dollar lifestyle empire around entertaining, decorating and perfect presentation, the episode has become an unusually messy public relations headache.

And although a few drops of chocolate may have started her wardrobe dilemma, it was Stewart’s last-minute costume choice that turned an ordinary Halloween party into a national controversy.
