Target is facing a fresh political firestorm after the retail giant pulled a children’s Halloween clown costume accused of resembling racist blackface and old minstrel-show imagery.

The costume, sold under Target’s seasonal Hyde and EEK! Boutique brand, was listed as the “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume.” But shoppers quickly erupted online over its appearance, with critics arguing the design looked disturbingly similar to racist caricatures used in America’s past.

The backlash became intense enough that Target removed the costume and issued a blunt apology.

“As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry,” a Target spokesperson told FOX Business.

“The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment,” the company continued, acknowledging the controversy was particularly painful for Black customers, employees and business partners.

Target said removing the costume was only a “first step” and vowed to investigate how it was approved for sale in the first place.

But the timing has fueled an even bigger debate.

Target dramatically scaled back several of its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives last year as President Donald Trump and conservative activists ramped up pressure on major American corporations to abandon DEI programs.

Now critics are pointing directly at those cutbacks as questions swirl over how such a controversial product apparently made it through Target’s internal review process.

One Threads user delivered a particularly brutal jab at the Minneapolis-based company.

“You really don’t have anyone left in Minneapolis to say, ‘Hey, that’s racist’?” the user wrote. “Y’all cut DEI and now you’ve got a minstrel clown costume for kids on your website.”

The controversy puts Target back in the middle of America’s increasingly bitter culture wars, with the company now facing criticism from some of the same progressive consumers who once viewed it as one of corporate America’s more diversity-conscious retailers.

Target says it is examining what went wrong and what changes are needed to prevent another embarrassing incident.

For critics, however, the Halloween costume debacle has already become Exhibit A in the argument that corporations abandoning diversity safeguards may eventually discover why those safeguards existed in the first place.
