A terrifying mystery is unfolding in rural New Mexico after three people were found dead inside a home — and several first responders reportedly became sick after coming into contact with an unknown substance at the scene.

Authorities say the disturbing incident happened in Mountainair, a small community east of Albuquerque, where emergency crews rushed to a home following reports of a suspected drug overdose. What they discovered quickly turned into a full-scale hazardous materials emergency.

According to New Mexico State Police, four people were found unresponsive inside the residence. Three were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth victim was rushed to a hospital in Albuquerque for emergency treatment.

But the nightmare didn’t stop there.

As paramedics, police officers, and medical workers responded, multiple first responders suddenly began suffering alarming symptoms, including nausea, dizziness, and other signs of possible exposure to a dangerous substance.

Officials later confirmed that 23 people were assessed and decontaminated after exposure to the mystery material. Most of those affected were first responders and medical personnel who came into contact with victims from the scene.

Two first responders were reportedly left in serious condition.

Mountainair EMS Chief Josh Lewis — believed to be the first person to enter the home — was hospitalized overnight for observation after becoming ill, according to local officials.

Even nurses at the University of New Mexico Hospital reportedly experienced symptoms after treating patients connected to the incident.

Hazmat teams from Albuquerque Fire Rescue were deployed to the property as investigators worked to identify exactly what triggered the frightening chain reaction.

“At this time, investigators believe the substance may be transmitted through contact and do not believe it to be airborne,” State Police Officer Wilson Silver said.

Officials have not publicly identified the substance involved, but early signs reportedly point toward drugs potentially playing a role in the deaths.

The eerie scene left residents shaken as law enforcement officers sealed off the rural property with yellow police tape while bodies were removed from the home. Witnesses described multiple vehicles crowding the dirt-road property, including trucks, vans, and a trailer sitting behind the main residence.

Authorities insisted there is currently no threat to the public, though the investigation remains ongoing.

Meanwhile, frustrated locals took to social media to vent about growing concerns surrounding drug abuse in the community.

Mountainair Mayor Peter Nieto acknowledged the tragedy in a statement, saying addiction continues to devastate communities across the country.

“But the reality is that addiction and substance abuse are issues affecting communities all across our state and nation,” Nieto said. “There is no simple or immediate solution.”
