Drivers in Tennessee got the shock of a lifetime Friday when a pickup truck hauling a massive load of bees crashed and unleashed what officials say was roughly one million buzzing escapees—turning a busy highway ramp into a real-life nightmare.
The wild scene unfolded around 11 a.m. on Interstate 40 in Knoxville as the truck, headed toward the Henley Street exit, wrecked and released the swarm into the air. Within minutes, the area was completely overrun, forcing authorities to shut down the ramp and warn stranded drivers to stay locked inside their vehicles as the bees took over.
According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the swarm quickly clustered around the wreckage and nearby roadway, creating a dangerous situation that looked straight out of a disaster movie. Crews rushed to the scene alongside professional beekeepers dressed head-to-toe in protective suits, working carefully to regain control of the chaos.
TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi kept the public updated in real time, initially warning that the ramp was closed due to a crash involving a truck carrying bees—and confirming the insects had escaped and were actively swarming the area. In a later update, he added that while the roadway eventually reopened, the truck itself was destroyed and the bees were “well… buzzing.”
Photos from the scene showed responders in full protective gear spraying and working around the mangled trailer, as thousands upon thousands of bees hovered nearby. At one point, officials even urged drivers not to leave their cars unless they were suited up like the beekeepers on site.
Despite the sheer scale of the incident, authorities confirmed no injuries were reported—a surprising outcome given the size of the swarm and the panic it caused.
Large shipments of bees like this are commonly transported across the country to help pollinate crops, but when something goes wrong, the results can be dramatic—and dangerous. Similar incidents have happened before, including a crash in Utah that released millions of bees onto an interstate.
In this case, crews were eventually able to contain and relocate the swarm, bringing hours of bizarre highway chaos to an end. But for drivers caught in the middle of it, it was a day they won’t forget anytime soon.
