A chilling new forecast from Ukraine’s top military spy claims Vladimir Putin is preparing to launch a massive assault on Europe that could ignite World War III within the next year.

Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service (GUR), says Moscow has quietly moved up its timetable for a wider war, pushing back its original plans by three years.

“According to the original plan, Russia was supposed to be ready by 2030,” Budanov said in a televised briefing. “Now the plans have been revised toward 2027.”

The warning comes as Russian forces continue their brutal campaign in Ukraine, and Western leaders warn that Moscow’s ambitions are expanding — not shrinking.

Budanov said Putin’s long-term goal is nothing short of rebuilding the Russian Empire, beginning with a strike on the Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — all NATO members and former Soviet republics.

“They see themselves as an empire,” he said. “For an empire to survive, it must move, expand, and absorb new territory.”

According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia plans to occupy the three Baltic nations outright and launch missile and air strikes against Poland — though not initially attempt to invade it.

The general described Putin’s thinking as “deeply psychological”, shaped by resentment over the Soviet Union’s collapse and hostility toward the West.

If Moscow’s forces cross into any NATO territory, Article 5 of the alliance charter would be triggered — meaning the United States and its allies are obligated to respond militarily.

That would pull Washington into a direct war with Russia for the first time — a nightmare scenario that Pentagon analysts have quietly been gaming out for months.

A senior U.S. defense official told Fox News this week that the Kremlin’s military buildup near the Baltics is “larger than anything we’ve seen since the Cold War.”

Another Western intelligence analyst called Budanov’s report “credible and deeply concerning,” adding that Russia’s defense spending and troop deployments “track with a 2027 timeline.”

Putin brushed off questions about new military action during his annual live Q&A with Russian citizens on Friday — but didn’t rule it out.

“There will be no operations if you treat us with respect,” he warned. “If you take our interests into account, just as we have tried to respect yours.”

He accused Western nations of “fanning the flames” by arming Ukraine and expanding NATO, saying the U.S. and Europe had “created this situation themselves.”

The Baltic states — some of America’s closest allies on Russia’s doorstep — are now racing to reinforce their borders. Poland has announced emergency defense spending increases, while Lithuania has called for U.S. troops to remain permanently stationed in the region.

In Brussels, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance is “watching Russia’s actions closely” and “ready to defend every inch of allied territory.

Putin’s tightening ties with China and North Korea have added to fears that the world is moving toward a new era of global confrontation. Analysts say his ultimate aim is to fracture NATO and drive the U.S. out of Europe.

“The only direction open to him is the West,” Budanov warned. “And he believes the West is weak.”

For now, Washington and its allies are ramping up weapons production, military drills, and intelligence coordination — bracing for what could become the most dangerous showdown since 1945.

“We are closer to a world war today than at any point in our lifetimes,” one senior European diplomat said. “And the clock is ticking.”
