‘The View’ Star Blasts Trump for ‘Disrespecting’ Melania by Bulldozing Her Wing

Former President Donald Trump’s decision to demolish the White House East Wing — the area historically dedicated to the First Lady’s office and staff — is igniting backlash, especially from The View’s Sunny Hostin, who accused Trump of showing blatant disrespect toward his wife, Melania Trump, and the legacy of first ladies before her.

Speaking on Thursday’s episode of The View, Hostin called the project “insulting” and “revealing,” suggesting that the former president’s order to tear down the East Wing says more about his marriage — and his ego — than any official White House renovation plan.

“If your husband decided to tear down the part of your house you hang out in, it says a lot about their relationship,” Hostin said. “It says a lot about the role of the first lady in his administration. It says a lot about what he thinks about her.”

The East Wing, which Trump ordered demolished earlier this week to make room for a sprawling $300 million ballroom, has served for decades as a symbolic and functional hub for the First Lady’s initiatives — from Eleanor Roosevelt’s groundbreaking press conferences to Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign.

Hostin reminded viewers of that history, noting that Eleanor Roosevelt made the East Wing the official “Office of the First Lady” in 1942, Betty Ford advocated for higher staff pay from that very space, and Laura Bush launched her literacy programs there.

“Betty Ford said, ‘If the West Wing is the mind of the nation, then the East Wing is the heart,’” Hostin recalled. “And now he’s literally torn it down.”

Construction equipment began dismantling the East Wing on Monday, with crews leveling the two-story structure by midweek. The Trump administration has claimed the project — a 90,000-square-foot ballroom funded through private donors — will create an elegant new venue for state functions and public events. Critics, however, see it as another example of Trump’s showmanship and disregard for tradition, particularly after promising earlier this year that renovations “wouldn’t touch the historic structure.”

During the same discussion, Whoopi Goldberg drew a pointed comparison to former First Lady Michelle Obama, who faced intense criticism simply for planting a vegetable garden on the South Lawn.

“Can you imagine what would’ve happened if Obama said, ‘I’m going to obliterate the East Wing?’” Goldberg asked. “All Michelle did was plant some kale, and people lost their minds.”

That garden — part of Obama’s healthy eating initiative — remains active today, with the White House kitchen still using its produce. Even Melania Trump once participated in the project, helping schoolchildren plant crops in 2017.

But the symbolism of Trump’s ballroom decision hasn’t gone unnoticed. The East Wing has long stood as the heart of the First Lady’s influence — a place where women like Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama carved out distinct public roles. Tearing it down, some argue, sends a not-so-subtle message about how little value Trump places on his wife’s position or the women who came before her.

Melania has yet to comment publicly on being displaced, though her reduced visibility during Trump’s second term has been widely noted. The former first lady has largely avoided Washington, spending most of her time at the couple’s private residences in New York and Palm Beach.

For Hostin, that quiet distance now looks more understandable than ever.

“It’s hard not to see this as personal,” she said. “He’s literally tearing down the part of the White House that represents women — and doing it to build a ballroom for himself. If that’s not a metaphor for this man’s presidency, I don’t know what is.”
