The film’s bold Super Bowl teaser, which depicted a fiery alien strike on the White House, initially alarmed studio execs at 20th Century Fox. But the public ate it up—and the movie went on to rake in over $800 million worldwide.

In 2021, director Roland Emmerich, writer-producer Dean Devlin, and star Bill Pullman looked back on the night Clinton invited them into the White House to watch the film that blew it sky-high.

And now, with Trump tearing down the very room where it happened, the memory feels more poignant than ever.

“We were in New York doing press,” recalled Devlin. “The phone rings in my hotel room and this voice says, ‘Please hold for the White House.’ I thought it was a prank.”

But it wasn’t. President Clinton himself had requested a private screening.

“All of a sudden, we’re standing in the White House,” Emmerich said. “Clinton is chatting us up. The screening room was tiny—a converted bowling alley. Terrible acoustics. But the energy? Unreal.”

In the front row sat Bill and Hillary Clinton, popcorn in hand. The filmmakers huddled nervously in the back row.

“I was too nervous to sit down,” Pullman recalled. “Roland and Dean kept saying, ‘You sit next to the president.’ So I did.”

And then came the moment—that scene.

“When the White House exploded, it hit different,” Devlin said. “Roland and I just looked at each other. We’re inside the White House… watching it blow up. It was surreal.”

And then, another twist.

“Bill Clinton suddenly jumps up and runs out,” Emmerich said. “We panicked. Did we offend him? Did he hate it?”

Turns out, the President just needed a bathroom break. “He came back a minute later, shaking his hands dry,” Devlin laughed. “We almost lost it.”

At the end of the film, Hillary leaned over to Pullman with a grin.

For Emmerich, the memory lingers—especially now.
