Tokyo is on high alert after a man armed with a kitchen knife was arrested outside the U.S. Embassy just three days before former President Donald Trump’s scheduled arrival in Japan.

According to Reuters, Japanese police detained a man in his 30s around 2:30 p.m. local time after he allegedly pointed the blade toward riot officers stationed near the embassy in central Tokyo. The tense confrontation ended with one officer suffering a heel injury during the arrest, though officials have not confirmed exactly how the wound occurred.

Local outlet The Asahi Shimbun reports that the suspect brandished the knife toward police before being subdued. Authorities have yet to disclose a motive, and Japan’s national broadcaster NHK notes that the man made no remarks regarding the U.S. or Trump during questioning.

The incident comes as Tokyo prepares for an unprecedented security operation ahead of Trump’s high-profile diplomatic tour. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has reportedly mobilized up to 18,000 officers to secure the city during the visit.

Trump is set to arrive in Japan on October 27, where he will meet newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as part of a wider Asian tour that includes Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. In South Korea, he is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on October 30—a meeting that could have major geopolitical implications for the region.

While authorities say there’s currently no indication of a connection between the embassy incident and Trump’s visit, the timing has intensified security concerns and drawn international attention to Tokyo just days before the former president’s arrival.
