Cruise Ship Rescues a People Stranded at Sea on Makeshift Raft

What was supposed to be a tropical getaway turned into a real-life rescue mission when a Royal Caribbean cruise liner came across a dozen desperate people adrift on a flimsy raft in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

On Sunday night, Sept. 28, Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas altered course to dodge the twin threats of Hurricane Humberto and Tropical Storm Imelda. That detour put the ship directly in the path of a battered makeshift raft carrying about 12 people, according to passengers and cruise news outlets.

“The raft was literally starting to fall apart when they found it,” one passenger told Cruise News Today after sharing cellphone footage of the dramatic scene.

As the ship slowed, crew members deployed a smaller rescue craft in the dark of night. Shaky video shows crew pulling the exhausted group aboard as passengers leaned over balconies to watch the drama unfold.

Once on deck, the stranded group—described by passengers as weak and dehydrated—were given bottled water and medical checks. Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but standard protocol calls for rescued people at sea to be handed over to local authorities when the ship docks.

One Florida passenger said the rescue left the entire ship buzzing. “It was surreal,” she said. “You’re on vacation, eating dinner, and suddenly you’re watching lives being saved right outside the window.”

This isn’t the first time Royal Caribbean has found itself in the role of lifeline. Back in February, the company’s Brilliance of the Seas diverted while sailing from New Orleans and scooped up 11 people stranded between Cuba and Mexico.

“They were bailing water from their boat when we found them,” passenger Randle Roper recalled to CNN earlier this year. “They looked malnourished and exhausted, but once onboard, the relief was written all over their faces.”

Maritime law requires ships to assist anyone in distress at sea, but cruise liners rarely expect to become rescue vessels. Still, as unstable weather patterns drive more migrant journeys across treacherous waters, such encounters are becoming less uncommon.

For passengers on Enchantment of the Seas, the dramatic midnight rescue will likely be the most unforgettable moment of their trip. As one guest summed it up: “We signed up for sunshine and cocktails—but we ended up witnessing a miracle.”
