‘The View’ Kill’s Cancellation Fever Dream

The ladies of The View aren’t going anywhere—no matter how much the Trump White House wants them gone.

ABC confirmed Monday that the hit daytime talk show will return for its 29th season on September 8, putting an end to weeks of right-wing speculation that the network had quietly canceled the program.

Rumors of the show’s demise started when Joy Behar casually mentioned on-air that the show was heading into its annual Labor Day hiatus. Within hours, pro-Trump circles online were celebrating, falsely claiming that the president’s allies had pressured ABC to pull the plug.

The Trump administration quickly escalated the drama. In a fiery statement, a White House spokesperson blasted Behar as “an irrelevant loser suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome,” adding that she should “self-reflect on her own jealousy of President Trump’s historic popularity before her show is the next to be pulled off air.”

Even Rosie O’Donnell, one of Trump’s oldest nemeses and a former co-host of The View, thought cancellation might be imminent. In a viral TikTok earlier this month, O’Donnell claimed she’d “read” that ABC executives were “reviewing liberal bias” on the show—what she called “code for, ‘We’re gonna cancel it, we’re just trying to soften you up first.’”

“ABC doesn’t want Trump’s wrath,” O’Donnell warned. “The pressure is real.”

ABC sees it differently. While the White House has repeatedly claimed the show “hit its lowest ratings ever,” a network spokesperson told reporters that The View has been the No. 1 daytime talk show in America for five straight seasons.

“Season to date, The View continues to dominate households and total viewers among all network daytime talk and news programs,” the rep said.

The controversy deepened when Trump’s FCC Chairman Brendan Carr hinted there could be “consequences” for the show after Behar accused the president of being “jealous” of former President Barack Obama. While Carr didn’t specify what those consequences might be, media watchdogs say it’s a chilling signal of political pressure on networks under Trump’s second term.

According to an earlier report from The Daily Beast, Disney CEO Bob Iger has asked the show’s hosts to “cool it” on the constant anti-Trump rhetoric during the “Hot Topics” segments. But co-host Ana Navarro, one of Trump’s loudest critics, says the request hasn’t changed her approach.

“I’m not here to coddle anyone,” Navarro said in a recent interview. “If the president lies, we’re going to call it out. Period.”

ABC’s announcement confirms that The View isn’t backing down—for now. But with Trump intensifying his war on “fake news” and openly targeting media outlets he believes are hostile, the show could find itself under even more pressure heading into the 2025 election cycle.
