President Donald Trump, 79, is facing backlash after a fiery meltdown on Truth Social, triggered by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s challenge to join him for a simple walk in Baltimore.
The invitation, extended last Thursday, was meant to highlight Moore’s efforts to revitalize the city. But instead of accepting—or ignoring—it, Trump lashed out, calling the idea “nasty and provocative” while slamming Baltimore as a “crime disaster.”
“As President, I would much prefer that he clean up this Crime disaster before I go there for a ‘walk,’” Trump raged. “Wes Moore’s record on Crime is a very bad one, unless he fudges his figures like many of the other Blue States.”
He escalated further, threatening to deploy the National Guard to Maryland “like Gavin Newscum needed in L.A.” and even hinted at pulling federal support for rebuilding Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed last year.
Gov. Moore, 46, wasted no time responding with biting sarcasm.
“President Bone Spurs will do anything to get out of walking—even if that means spouting off more lies about the progress we’re making on public safety in Maryland,” Moore wrote on X.
Then came the kicker: “Hey Donald, we can get you a golf cart if that makes things easier. Just let my team know.”
The golf cart dig wasn’t random. During the 2017 G7 summit in Italy, Trump famously waited for a golf cart while other world leaders walked a short distance to a photo op.
Trump’s public reluctance to walk comes amid growing concerns about his health.
At a summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska earlier this month, cameras caught Trump struggling to walk a straight line. He also appeared confused, referring to the meeting as being “in Russia” before being corrected by aides.
White House officials have dismissed concerns, but medical experts note that Trump has previously been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that can cause swelling and mobility issues.
“It’s not just about cardio,” one Democratic strategist told CNN. “It’s about symbolism. Wes Moore challenged him to walk because leadership means showing up, and Trump clearly doesn’t want to be seen struggling on camera.”
Moore isn’t backing down. Appearing on CBS’s Face the Nation, he criticized Trump’s threats to deploy federal troops and vowed to “push back against unconstitutional power grabs.”
“When I say all options are on the table, all options are on the table,” Moore said, hinting at aggressive redistricting moves in response to Republican-led gerrymandering in Texas and beyond.
Democrats view the clash as emblematic of a broader fight over urban safety, federal authority, and Trump’s handling of blue states.
“Baltimore doesn’t need troops,” Moore said. “It needs investment, partnership, and leadership. That’s what we’re focused on.”
Neither the White House nor Moore’s office has confirmed whether the walk will happen. But with Trump’s online tirades escalating, political analysts say this spat is about more than cardio—it’s about control, optics, and the president’s vulnerability.
“The governor challenged Trump to put his feet where his mouth is,” political commentator Maya Jenkins told MSNBC. “And Trump blinked.”
