President Donald Trump sparked new speculation about his health Friday when he appeared in public with what looked like a heavy smear of makeup slathered across his right hand — an apparent attempt to hide bruising.
The moment came during Trump’s visit to The People’s House, an immersive White House experience across from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Cameras quickly caught the unblended concealer, shining under the lights as the president waved and shook hands with supporters. But beneath the surface, critics say the real issue isn’t bad makeup — it’s transparency.
When pressed about the bizarre sight, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted the bruising was caused by “frequent handshaking” and dismissed any deeper health concerns. “President Trump is a man of the people and he meets more Americans and shakes more hands than any president in history,” Leavitt said in a prepared statement. “His commitment is unwavering.”
It’s not the first time the administration has leaned on that line. Last month, the White House disclosed that Trump, 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) — a condition affecting blood flow in the legs and hands that can cause swelling, bruising, and discoloration. In a July memo, Trump’s physician Dr. Sean Barbabella called the bruising “minor soft tissue irritation,” exacerbated by Trump’s daily use of aspirin as part of “a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.” However, the doctor has yet to take questions from reporters — despite earlier promises of “full transparency.”
The makeup moment follows weeks of speculation about Trump’s visibly swollen ankles, which were photographed during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage earlier this month. Social media exploded with #CankleGate after the images went viral, with critics accusing the White House of hiding Trump’s declining health. “It’s becoming a pattern,” said Dr. Marissa Holden, a political analyst and former medical advisor for congressional committees. “First the ankles, now the hand bruising — and yet there’s no detailed health briefing, no real answers. The American public deserves transparency.”
Trump, who recently touted his annual physical as proof he is in “excellent cognitive and physical health,” has reportedly resisted lifestyle changes recommended for managing CVI, including the use of compression socks and dietary adjustments. “There have been no adjustments made to his lifestyle,” Leavitt admitted last week when asked about treatment plans.
But Friday’s appearance — coupled with Trump’s awkward attempt to hide his right hand during Oval Office remarks later that afternoon — has only fueled doubts about the administration’s narrative. “Every time the White House downplays these issues, it backfires,” said Democratic strategist Lisa Renard. “They can spin this as much as they want, but when the president’s makeup is doing the talking, Americans notice.”
With Trump facing a turbulent second term marked by international tensions, inflation battles, and protests over his latest executive orders, any sign of frailty risks undermining his image as a relentless fighter. “The irony,” Renard added, “is that this administration is obsessed with optics — yet the optics keep betraying them.”
