Democrat Wages All-Night Battle with Catheter and Urine Bag

“This is about protecting democracy — no matter the cost,” Alvarado says.

Texas State Sen. Carol Alvarado is once again putting her body on the line to stop what Democrats are calling an “unconstitutional power grab” by Republicans — this time over a controversial redistricting bill that could reshape Texas politics for a generation.

On Friday, the Houston-area Democrat arrived at the Texas Senate chamber fully prepared for an hours-long filibuster against House Bill 4, a Trump-backed proposal that would give Republicans up to five new congressional seats in 2026.

“I’m here to fight for fair representation,” Alvarado told reporters before entering the chamber. “Texas voters deserve to choose their leaders — not the other way around.”

Alvarado, 57, took extraordinary measures to prepare for the marathon speech. According to the Washington Post, she underwent an IV infusion, completed a hot yoga session, and even had a catheter inserted so she wouldn’t need to leave the floor. Wearing a long blue floral dress to discreetly hide a urine bag and a pair of running shoes, Alvarado walked into the chamber just after noon, greeted by cheers from supporters.

“Going to be a long night,” she posted on X, formerly Twitter, alongside a short video shared by the Texas Senate Democratic Caucus.

The redistricting bill is part of a wider Republican strategy, strongly supported by President Trump, to tighten GOP control over Congress before the 2026 midterms. Democrats warn the legislation would disenfranchise millions of minority voters across Texas, a state where Latino and Black populations have fueled explosive growth over the last decade.

“This is nothing more than a blatant attempt to silence communities of color,” said Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas). “They know Texas is changing, and they’re trying to rig the system before voters kick them out.”

Republicans, however, argue the bill reflects “population shifts” and ensures “accurate representation.” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who presides over the state Senate, dismissed Alvarado’s filibuster as “political theater,” saying, “This bill ensures Texans get the representation they deserve. Democrats are just delaying the inevitable.”

Alvarado is no stranger to high-profile battles in Texas politics. Back in 2021, she set a state record with a 15-hour, 7-minute filibuster against a restrictive GOP-led voting bill that banned drive-thru voting, 24-hour polling places, and ballot drop boxes — a measure that disproportionately impacted urban and minority voters.

“She’s a fighter,” said state Sen. Roland Gutierrez (D-Texas). “When Carol stands up, she’s standing up for every Texan who believes in democracy.”

While Alvarado’s filibuster can delay a vote, it cannot stop it entirely. With Republicans holding a majority in both chambers, House Bill 4 is expected to pass in the coming days. Democrats have vowed to challenge the law in court, setting up what could become a landmark Supreme Court battle over redistricting and voting rights — one that could shape elections nationwide for years to come.

“This is bigger than Texas,” Alvarado said. “This is about the future of democracy in America.”
