Vice President JD Vance is under fire after making a stunning historical blunder while defending President Donald Trump’s controversial push to end the Ukraine war through negotiation.
Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday, Vance tried to justify the administration’s sudden shift toward mediating talks between Moscow and Kyiv—only to spark ridicule when he falsely claimed that “every major conflict in human history” has ended with negotiations.
“If you go back to World War Two, if you go back to World War One, if you go back to every major conflict in human history, they all end with some kind of negotiation,” Vance declared confidently.
Historians, political analysts, and social media users quickly pounced, pointing out that World War II—Vance’s own example—ended not with a handshake but with the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in May 1945 and Imperial Japan in September 1945, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
“Vance says WWII ended in negotiation — someone tell that to Hiroshima,” one viral post on X read, echoing thousands of similar reactions.
The gaffe came as the Trump administration attempts to recast America’s role in the ongoing war. Just nine days ago, Trump stood alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, warning of “severe consequences” if Moscow refused to accept a ceasefire. Yet, despite tough rhetoric, the summit ended with no deal and only a vague promise for “more talks.”

Now, the White House is signaling a starkly different approach: less pressure on Putin and more emphasis on mediation—even if that means Ukraine might be pushed toward territorial concessions.
Vance insisted the U.S. is “not an active party in the negotiations” and described America’s new role as “effectively mediating.”
“If Ukrainians are willing to say something on territory that brings the conflict to a close, we’re not going to stop them,” he said. “We’re also not going to force them, because it’s not our country.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly rejected any agreement requiring Ukraine to surrender territory illegally seized by Russia since 2014.
“Ukraine will never trade land for peace,” Zelensky said last week in response to whispers of a U.S.-brokered deal. “Our people have bled for their freedom.”
Democratic lawmakers seized on Vance’s remarks as evidence of what they call “Trump’s appeasement strategy” toward Putin.
“Vice President Vance can’t rewrite World War II to justify selling out Ukraine,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) in a statement. “This administration’s weakness is emboldening Russia while undermining our allies.”
Political analysts warn that Trump’s reversal could fracture bipartisan support for Ukraine aid. While polls show Republican voters increasingly skeptical of sending billions overseas, recent surveys still indicate that a majority of Americans—particularly Democrats and independents—favor standing firm against Russian aggression.
“President Trump is trying to sell this as peace through negotiation,” said Dr. Fiona Hill, former White House Russia expert. “But what Moscow hears is weakness.”
Meanwhile, JD Vance’s gaffe continues to trend online, overshadowing the administration’s message and fueling late-night comedy fodder. “Apparently,” joked one X user, “World War II ended when Hitler and Roosevelt signed a brunch menu at Denny’s.”
With the Ukraine war dragging into its fourth year, President Trump faces mounting pressure to deliver results. But with no ceasefire, growing backlash from Democrats, and a vice president who can’t keep his history straight, critics say the administration risks looking both weak abroad and confused at home.
As one foreign policy expert put it bluntly:
“Negotiation works when both sides want peace. Right now, Putin wants territory. And Trump seems ready to let him have it.”

I don’t remember Biden doing anything to end the war. He just kept sending billions of our tax dollars to Ukraine with not accountability of any of it.
Vance was absolutely correct! Eisenhower negotiated with officials from Germany. Those officials then communicated with Berlin. Later Berlin gave the officials permission to sign the surrender agreements. France signed as just a “witness” because they were occupied by Germany. The negotiated agreement specified WWII would end next day and several hours later… 11:00 PM… “23:00″…
Is it really a blunder? If you really, really know history the IS did not actually get unconditional surrender from Japan. Yes we had all the advantages but., We negotiated away the right to end the Emperor being the head of the constitutional state! Did anyone know that? But before we agreed to change our stance from unconditional surrender to surrender with in condition, that the Emperor is unharmed and continues as monarch like in the UK Japan refused to surrender! BTW that was their offer before and after the atomic bombs were dropped! We negotiated!!
BTW read Truman’s diary the US dropped the bombs to impress the USSR and their dropping did not cause Japan to surrender! Our negotiation to keep the Emperor did!
So that that history lesson!!! JD was right!
Yes, took months of negotiations to get Japan to surrender… plus we had to prove we had at least one more atomic bomb… although carpet/fire/projectile bombing had actually done much more damage to Tokyo…
He is an embarrassment!!!
Vance is an idiot!
Trump is bad but Vance is worse
