Texas native and Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey is calling on Americans to rally behind the Lone Star State after catastrophic flooding ripped through central Texas, leaving dozens dead and many more missing.
In a solemn message posted to social media on Sunday, McConaughey, 55, pleaded for urgent aid. “At least 70 lives have been lost, many more are unaccounted for, and countless Texans are hurting — inside and out,” he wrote. “If you’re able, please lend a helping hand where and how you can.”
The actor’s post continued, “It’s gonna be a long road ahead, but right now the shock, the pain, and the chaos need the steady hand of a neighbor.”
McConaughey, who grew up in Uvalde, knows tragedy all too well. He previously returned home in 2022 to support victims of the Robb Elementary School mass shooting. He and wife Camila Alves, 42, spent weeks in the community, visiting families and pushing for sensible gun reform.
“Texans are some of the most resilient and generous people on the planet,” he added. “But this time, even Texas needs a hand.”
Since Friday, the Guadalupe River has surged to historic levels — rising more than 30 feet above normal. The death toll now stands at 82, with emergency crews still searching for the missing.
McConaughey wasn’t the only celebrity moved by the scale of the devastation. Houston-born actress Jennifer Garner shared a haunting message via Instagram: “Texas. God, be near.”
Pop superstar Shakira, who played a sold-out show in San Antonio over the weekend, pledged to donate a portion of her concert proceeds to Catholic Charities of San Antonio.
“Our hearts and prayers are with those affected by the flood in Central Texas,” she wrote. “If you would like to join me in donating, please click the link. Your help is appreciated.”
Reality TV moguls Khloe Kardashian and Kris Jenner also added their voices.
“I can’t stop thinking about the families in Texas and the overwhelming pain they’re going through,” Khloe, 41, wrote. “As a mother, this kind of tragedy hits in a place words can’t reach. I’m praying with everything I have in me.”
Kris Jenner, 69, called the loss “heartbreaking beyond measure.”
“No family should ever have to experience such sorrow,” Jenner said. “Life is so fragile, and at times unbearably unfair. To the families living this nightmare, we are holding you in our hearts.”
Texas officials have activated the National Guard and FEMA is on the ground. But with homes destroyed, roads submerged, and families displaced, private help is critical.
McConaughey ended his post with a rallying cry: “Let’s show up, y’all. Together.”
