In a moment charged with moral clarity and political defiance, Pope Leo XIV used his first major speech to global leaders to send an unmistakable message: governments must stop treating migrants like criminals—and start treating them like human beings.

And whether he named him or not, the message landed squarely on the doorstep of President Donald Trump.

Standing before the Vatican’s diplomatic corps on Friday, Pope Leo said no society can call itself just while dehumanizing immigrants, the poor, or the vulnerable.

“No one is exempted from striving to ensure respect for the dignity of every person,” the 69-year-old pontiff declared. “From the unborn to the elderly, from the sick to the unemployed—citizens and immigrants alike.”

It was a defining moment for the first American-born pope in history—and one that marked a sharp turn from the Trump administration’s increasingly authoritarian approach to immigration enforcement.

From Chicago to the Vatican

Born Robert Prevost in Chicago to a French-American father and a Creole mother with Haitian roots, Pope Leo spoke from deep personal history. His grandparents fled poverty and persecution to build new lives in the United States—a legacy that Trump-era hardliners would likely label “chain migration.”

“My story is that of a citizen, the descendant of immigrants, who in turn chose to emigrate,” Leo said, recalling years he spent working with impoverished communities in Peru.

A Papal Retweet, a Presidential Shame

Long before donning the papal white, Leo made headlines for condemning U.S. deportation policies under Trump. In a social media post that now reads like prophecy, then-Cardinal Prevost blasted Trump and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele for laughing in the Oval Office while discussing deportations to Bukele’s infamous mega-prison, CECOT.

Among the deportees? Kilmar Abrego Garcia—a Maryland father with a disabled child—who was legally living in the U.S. and removed “by mistake.”

Rather than correct the error, Trump doubled down with a photo op.

Another case that rattled the nation: 25-year-old Andry Romero, a gay asylum-seeker who was arrested after showing up for his scheduled appointment. He hasn’t been heard from since.

“His mother just wants to know if he’s alive,” said Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) in a now-viral exchange with DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “Can we check and do a wellness check?”

Noem’s reply? “That’s not under my jurisdiction.”

‘Not Christian’: Francis Spoke First, Leo Doubles Down

Pope Leo’s fiery defense of migrants follows in the footsteps of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who famously rebuked Trump’s border wall as un-Christian.

But where Francis often spoke in parables, Leo is a blunt instrument.

“Our dignity always remains unchanged,” Leo told the diplomats. “It is the dignity of a creature willed and loved by God.”

Meanwhile in Washington…

Trump’s nominee for Vatican ambassador, far-right activist Brian Burch, was nowhere to be found. Senate Democrats blocked his confirmation amid outrage over the GOP’s latest budget proposal—one that would gut Medicaid, slash poverty programs, and redirect funds to tax cuts for the rich.

It’s exactly the kind of policy Pope Leo warned against.

The Coming Clash

Vice President J.D. Vance is still expected to attend Leo’s inauguration mass on Sunday. But behind the photos and handshakes, an ideological showdown is brewing—one that pits the world’s most powerful religious voice against a president who has shown little regard for moral restraint.

With Pope Leo now seated on the throne of St. Peter, the question for America is no longer whether the Church will speak out. It’s whether the people—and their leaders—will listen.

    1. I’m sorry but migrants are not the same as illegal immigrants! Every country, has the right to determine who comes into their country, just like the Vatican does! I’m 100% for immigration, legal immigration like my grandparents came her or my girl friend who came her legally from the Philippines!!
      Those are migrants.

No we don’t want gang members, human traffickers or drug dealers. We want people who can speak English like my grand parents had to prove they could at Ellies Island so they too can assimilate into our society and build a life by moving up economically- which you can’t do in this country without knowing English!

Also, why doesn’t the Pope stick to converting more people into being good Christians which is the mission of the church! Good Christian’s would be drug dealers, or violent criminals.

Instead of defending the likes of Kilmar Abrego Garciawho had a violent history, was here illegally and was already subject to a removal and deportation order! Records and traffic cameras show him earning his living transporting illegals against our law!!!

    2. I’m having ICE check to see if you are really an “American”, you certainly don’t sound like one, Boris…

    1. The Pope needs to rail in his Brother with his I am Trump and being disparaging about the United States. His Brother will hurt this Pope.

  4. regina, i’m not being kind when i tell you to back to wherever you came from, cuz you sure as hell don’t speak english. and i agree with you kind folks, i’m sure glad to have this pope.

  5. The Vatican has high walls and rules for entering. If you don”t obey Vatican Rules, you are arrested.

As large as the Vatican is, it could accommodate thousands of migrants! Leo, let them in!

  6. How many plane loads of illegals does Leo want? I’m sure we can do an air drop into Vatican City within the next 24 hours.
