In a haunting twist of fate, Betsy Arakawa, the longtime wife of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, may have died while desperately trying to save him — both unaware they were being stalked by a rare but deadly virus.

Just days before her sudden death in February, Arakawa, 62, was frantically searching the internet for answers. Her focus? COVID-19 symptoms like dizziness and nosebleeds — signs Gene Hackman had reportedly begun to experience.

But it wasn’t COVID. It was something far more lethal.

According to a newly released investigation by New Mexico health officials, Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare and fast-acting disease spread through rodent urine and droppings. It’s a terrifying illness with flu-like symptoms that can rapidly evolve into acute respiratory failure. The virus is almost always fatal if not caught early.

“She was trying to understand what was happening to her husband,” one investigator told local media. “But it seems they were both already exposed.”

Authorities revealed that Arakawa had bookmarked health articles on her computer between February 8 and February 12 — the day she died. Her online searches revealed increasing concern. One of her last queries? A local Santa Fe healthcare provider.

But she never made it to the appointment.

That same week, Arakawa emailed her massage therapist to cancel a session, citing “cold-like” symptoms Gene had woken up with on February 11. Though his COVID test was negative, she wrote she was postponing “out of an abundance of caution.” She also purchased Boost Oxygen canisters online — a potential sign she was beginning to feel short of breath herself.

The most chilling detail emerged from the environmental inspection of the Hackmans’ property: a severe rodent infestation. Officials found dead mice and nests scattered across eight separate outbuildings on the couple’s remote Santa Fe estate. The virus likely lurked unnoticed in those hidden corners, waiting to strike.

Gene Hackman, now 95, passed away just days later, believed to be around February 17 or 18. His death was attributed to heart disease and complications from Alzheimer’s.

While Hackman’s health was already in decline, there are still unanswered questions about whether hantavirus played any role in accelerating his final days.

Critics are now questioning whether the couple received adequate environmental health support in their rural New Mexico home. With federal health and environmental agencies facing years of defunding and deregulation during the Trump administration, some say the warning signs may have been missed — or worse, ignored.

“This is exactly what happens when you gut public health infrastructure,” said Dr. Lila Renshaw, a former CDC epidemiologist. “Rodent-borne diseases are preventable. But it takes resources and education — something we’ve seen slashed time and time again.”

Though Betsy Arakawa stayed largely out of the spotlight during her decades with Hackman, her final days tell a story of love, confusion, and ultimately, tragedy.

Her last Google search may have been for help — but help never came in time.

  1. Here we go again!
Gene Hackman dies on February 17th 2025, less than 30 days since Trump took office from what appears to be complications from hantavirus

And it’s blamed on (and I quote from the article) “ With federal health and environmental agencies facing years of defunding and deregulation during the Trump administration, some say the warning signs may have been missed — or worse, ignored.“ and (Also quoted from the article )” “This is exactly what happens when you gut public health infrastructure,” said Dr. Lila Renshaw, a former CDC epidemiologist. “Rodent-borne diseases are preventable. But it takes resources and education — something we’ve seen slashed time and time again.”

How can you blame Trump? If that’s the cause rightly blame the Biden Administration!

The news is;?Gene Hackman and his wife died possibly from complications from the Hantavirus and we need to ask authorities how can we better notify rural residents of the dangers of rodent infestations and what to look for?

Now that would be responsible journalism not the political propaganda you posted

  2. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Another left wing conspiracy theory!! This should be called “Leftwingnews.org”!! BYE! Done Reading this slanted Shit!!!
