The reality TV world collided with America’s intensifying immigration policies this week as Simon Guobadia, estranged husband of Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Nigerian-born businessman is currently being held at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, according to records from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reviewed by People.

Williams, 43, broke her silence shortly after the news broke, issuing a brief but pointed statement via Instagram:

“It’s disheartening to see my estranged husband make choices that have led to this outcome. At this moment, my priority is moving forward with my family. 🙏🏾”

A representative for Williams declined further comment.

Guobadia’s Immigration Status Under Scrutiny

Guobadia, who had often spoken about his long residency in the United States, now finds himself entangled in an increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement environment. Last year, he took to Instagram to reflect on his journey in America, writing, “Happy Tuesday to all who ever overcame and persevered in life. You are winning 👌🏾 #42yearsLivinginAmerica.”

His detainment, however, signals potential legal complications regarding his residency or visa status. This development comes at a time when former President Donald Trump, widely criticized for his hardline immigration policies, has been vocal about ramping up deportations. Many observers see Guobadia’s situation as a direct result of these broader enforcement actions.

Williams Moves On Amidst Legal Battles

Williams and Guobadia’s relationship has been turbulent. After just 15 months of marriage, Williams filed for divorce in February 2024, setting off a string of legal disputes. In September, a judge ruled in her favor regarding their prenuptial agreement. By November, court filings revealed that Williams had been granted temporary sole possession of their shared residence—along with full rights to film television, movies, and social media content at the property.

Speaking to People at the time, Williams expressed gratitude for her legal victories: “God is good. You know, Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, has never let me down. And at the end of the day, people are gonna take their shots, people are gonna try to speak on your future, but it’s already written, baby. You can’t mess that up.”

Guobadia’s legal troubles now add another layer of complexity to their already contentious split. While Williams has not directly commented on his immigration status, her decision to swiftly distance herself suggests she is eager to move forward.

A Bigger Picture: Immigration in America

Guobadia’s case highlights a larger, ongoing debate in America. Immigration enforcement has intensified under policies originally shaped during the Trump administration, and critics argue that the system disproportionately targets non-violent individuals who have built lives in the U.S. for decades.

Activists have pointed out the contrast in enforcement, with ICE resources often directed at high-profile figures rather than addressing systemic immigration issues. “We have seen this before—wealthy or not, people of color are disproportionately scrutinized,” said immigration attorney Carla Mendes. “Guobadia’s case is a reminder that no one is immune when the government decides to ramp up deportations.”

For now, Guobadia remains in ICE custody as his legal team likely scrambles to prevent deportation. Whether he will be allowed to stay or forced to leave remains uncertain, but for Williams, the chapter appears to be closing.

  1. If he wanted to be a citizen then why didn’t he do it legally. Too much happened I this country to let people go around without being documented. I guarantee if one of my family members were assaulted by an illegal I would be in jail for murder. Not the illegal but me. If I have illegals approaching my doorstep they will be confronted. Thank the Dear Lord that President Trump has taken over
