The United States Postal Service (USPS) has officially set March 27 as the release date for its highly anticipated Betty White ‘Forever’ stamp, paying tribute to the beloved television icon and staunch animal advocate.
White, who passed away on December 31, 2021, just weeks before her 100th birthday, left an indelible mark on American entertainment. A household name for generations, she was best known for her roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls, where her comedic brilliance captivated millions.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy emphasized the significance of this tribute, stating, “Betty White was more than just an actress—she was an American treasure. Her wit, charm, and unwavering support for causes close to her heart, especially animal welfare, made her a role model for so many.”
The commemorative stamp will be unveiled at a first-day-of-issue ceremony at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, a location chosen to reflect White’s lifelong commitment to wildlife conservation. “Betty was a dear friend to animals, and this honor is exactly what she would have loved,” said zoo director Denise Verret.
Designed by Greg Breeding, the stamp features a portrait of White based on a 2010 photograph by Dale Stephanos. As a ‘Forever’ stamp, it will be valid for first-class postage indefinitely, ensuring White’s legacy endures for years to come.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, and raised in California, White’s entertainment career began in the late 1930s. Just three months after graduating from Beverly Hills High School, she appeared in one of television’s earliest experimental broadcasts. She later became a trailblazer, becoming the first woman to produce a sitcom in the 1950s—a feat rarely acknowledged in Hollywood’s male-dominated industry.
White’s range as an actress was unmatched. She played the sharp-witted and flirtatious Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show before charming audiences as the lovable, naive Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls. Her ability to reinvent herself over decades endeared her to fans young and old.
White’s death in 2021 was met with an outpouring of tributes from celebrities, politicians, and everyday Americans alike. President Donald Trump, who awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018, once remarked, “Betty White represented everything great about America—she was tough, she was funny, and she never backed down from what she believed in.”
Fans across the country are expected to snatch up the stamp upon its release, both as a tribute to White’s enduring legacy and a nostalgic nod to a golden era of television.
With the launch of this ‘Forever’ stamp, the USPS ensures that America will always remember Betty White—not just as a Hollywood icon, but as a woman who made the world a little brighter, one laugh at a time.
