The FBI has unearthed 2,400 long-hidden records related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, following an executive order by President Donald Trump demanding the full declassification of remaining files. The discovery adds a new layer to one of the most controversial events in American history.

A Long-Awaited Revelation

For decades, researchers and historians have pushed for full disclosure of JFK assassination records. While the National Archives has released approximately 97% of the estimated five million pages related to the case, gaps remained. The newly found records, contained in 14,000 pages of documents, were never received by the original review board tasked with disclosure under the 1992 JFK Records Act.

The discovery comes as part of a broader digitization effort by the FBI, which began in 2020 with the opening of the Central Records Complex. “The resulting, more comprehensive records inventory, coupled with technological advances, allows us to more quickly search and locate records,” the FBI said in a statement to The Daily Beast.

Trump’s Executive Order Sparks Action

Trump’s January 23, 2025, executive order mandated the release of all classified records related to the assassinations of JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. The directive was a follow-through on his 2024 campaign promise to provide “Americans the truth after six decades of secrecy.”

“During my first term, I was advised to withhold some files,” Trump said at a recent press conference. “I regret that decision. The American people deserve to know everything.”

The FBI’s latest search, conducted in response to this order, led to the discovery of previously overlooked documents, which are now being transferred to the National Archives for review.

Experts and Researchers React

Jefferson Morley, vice president of JFKFacts.org, called the discovery “a major breakthrough.”

“This is huge. It shows the FBI is taking this seriously,” Morley told Axios. “For years, agencies have resisted full transparency. Now, they’re finally responding.”

Others remain skeptical. Former House Select Committee investigator G. Robert Blakey, who helped lead a congressional probe into JFK’s assassination, cautioned that the newly discovered records must be scrutinized for completeness.

“The question is, were these records genuinely misplaced, or were they deliberately withheld?” Blakey said. “This could either be a clerical oversight or something much bigger.”

The Lingering Mystery of JFK’s Death

Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. The official investigation concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald, a former Marine with communist sympathies, acted alone. However, conspiracy theories have persisted, with speculation about involvement from the CIA, the Mafia, or foreign governments.

The 1992 JFK Records Act required full disclosure of assassination records by 2017, but successive administrations delayed complete transparency. Trump initially blocked some files at the CIA’s request, while President Joe Biden later authorized only a partial release.

What Comes Next?

The newly found records remain classified for now, pending their transfer to the National Archives. Experts anticipate that their contents could either confirm existing theories or introduce new questions about one of the most scrutinized assassinations in modern history.

“This is a step in the right direction,” Morley said. “But the American people won’t be satisfied until every single page is made public.”

With the records now in the hands of archivists, the final chapters of the JFK assassination story may soon be written—or rewritten.
