A haunting moan can be heard in newly released audio from a conversation between air traffic control and the doomed air ambulance that crashed in Pennsylvania on Friday night.

The chilling exchange was captured in the moments before the Learjet 55, which had just taken off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, crashed in a residential neighborhood. The crash tragically claimed the lives of at least six people, including a young pediatric patient who had just undergone life-saving treatment in the U.S. and was being transported back to Mexico.

In the tense moments leading up to the crash, air traffic control asked the pilot, “What frequency are you on?” As the conversation continued, sharp-eyed listeners picked up on a brief exchange that raised eyebrows. One person could be heard saying the other was “talking to the wrong people,” followed by a haunting moan, which many on social media speculated came from the cockpit. No official explanation has been given for the crash yet, though an investigation is underway.

Moments later, a controller could be heard asking, “What’s going on down there?” Another dispatcher responded, “We have a lost aircraft.” The response was chilling: “We’re not exactly sure what happened, we’re trying to figure it out. For now, the field is going to be closed.”

The crash happened just days after another aviation disaster — a collision between an American Airlines jet and a U.S. military Blackhawk helicopter at Washington D.C.’s Reagan International Airport, which killed 67 people. These back-to-back tragedies have raised concerns about safety in the aviation industry, with experts citing numerous near-misses and errors.

The air ambulance, operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, was en route to Tijuana, Mexico, after a stop in Missouri. The crash site, near Roosevelt Boulevard and Cottman Avenue, quickly erupted in flames, devastating the neighborhood. Businesses and cars were consumed by the inferno, and thick black smoke filled the air as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Among the passengers was the young girl, who had fought bravely through medical treatment in Philadelphia at Shriners Children’s Hospital. “She did her course of care. She was going home,” said Shai Gold, a spokesperson for the air ambulance company. “She fought quite a lot to survive, and unfortunately, this tragedy happened on the way home.”

The crash also claimed the lives of the child’s mother, the pilot, a co-pilot, a doctor, and a paramedic — all of whom had been working to ensure the child’s safe return home.

Heartbreaking footage from the ground shows the full scale of the destruction. A drone video captured the chaotic scene as massive orange flames consumed homes, businesses, and parked cars along a busy street. In another shocking clip, a doorbell camera captured the moment of the explosion, with two unsuspecting people narrowly escaping the fireball.

Officials from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash, and Jet Rescue Air Ambulance does not believe anyone on board survived the impact.
