Authorities have identified 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow as the suspect in a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School that left two dead and six injured on Monday morning. Police believe Rupnow, who also went by the name Samantha, acted alone before taking her own life.

The shooting unfolded during a mixed-grade study hall at the private K-12 school, which enrolls approximately 300 students. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that Rupnow had been present on campus as a student that day, quelling speculation about an external breach.

“The shooter was at school,” Barnes confirmed during a Monday evening press briefing. “We have no information to suggest this was anything but an internal tragedy.”

Emergency services were alerted at 10:57 a.m. by a brave second grader who called 911 to report the gunfire. Officers arrived within minutes and confirmed by 11:05 a.m. that the shooter was down, with the weapon recovered. No law enforcement officers discharged their firearms during the incident.

Two victims, a teacher and a student, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released. Six others were injured, with two students in critical condition. A teacher and another student remain hospitalized in stable condition, while two other students have been discharged.

A sixth-grade survivor shared the harrowing moments with CNN: “We heard the gunshots, and people started crying. We just waited until the police came, and then they escorted us out to the church.”

Investigators are still piecing together a motive. Chief Barnes confirmed that police interviewed Rupnow’s family and conducted a search of her home. The parents are reportedly cooperating fully with the investigation.

Responding to online rumors about Rupnow’s gender identity and a purported manifesto, Barnes remarked, “I don’t know whether Natalie was transgender or not. And quite frankly, I don’t think that’s important at all.” He added that the manifesto’s authenticity remains unverified.

Families gathered for an emotional prayer service Monday night to honor the victims. Many leaned on faith as they tried to process the tragedy. “This is a time to come together, not to divide,” said Pastor Mark Olson, who led the service.

The weapon used was identified as a handgun, though Chief Barnes noted that its exact details remain under review. “It may still be on the property,” he explained, citing the careful procedures required for evidence collection.

Rupnow’s father is cooperating with police but is also grappling with the loss of his child. “He lost someone as well,” Barnes said, urging patience and understanding as the investigation continues.

“Today is a sad, sad day,” Barnes concluded. “Not just for Madison, but for our entire country.” The tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School has once again raised urgent questions about youth mental health, gun safety, and school security.

As the community begins to heal, authorities promise a thorough investigation and call for unity in facing this profound loss.
