A grieving ex-wife who publicly mourned a slain Los Angeles doctor is now accused of masterminding his murder in a chilling twist that has rocked the local community. Prosecutors claim Ahang Kelk, 53, orchestrated an elaborate plan to kill her former husband, Dr. Hamid Mirshojae, following years of bitter disputes.
Dr. Mirshojae, a well-known physician, was fatally shot on August 23 while walking to his car outside the Warner Plaza Medical Clinic in Woodland Hills. According to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, the ambush was no random act but a calculated hit allegedly commissioned by Kelk.
“The depth of the deceit and violence involved in this case is chilling,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated. “We will not rest until justice is served.”
Police have arrested the suspected gunman, 41-year-old Evan Hardman, alongside two alleged accomplices. Investigators believe Hardman had been hired months earlier by Kelk to carry out a prior assault on Mirshojae using baseball bats—an attack that left the doctor deeply shaken and fearing for his life.
The ex-spouses’ troubled relationship spanned over a decade of legal and personal battles. The couple divorced in 2009 but remained entangled in court disputes over real estate holdings and child support for their two children. Both had filed restraining orders against each other over allegations of death threats.
“Their fights were constant and deeply personal,” said a family friend who asked not to be named. “It was as if they couldn’t let each other go, even when it turned toxic.”
In a particularly bizarre episode in 2017, Kelk was accused of staging an assault at her home during another contentious legal battle involving a different former partner. That incident further complicated her legal record, raising suspicions after Mirshojae’s murder.
Despite being under scrutiny, Kelk organized and attended a public memorial for Mirshojae in early September. Dressed in black and surrounded by grieving friends and family, she wept openly. “I’m speechless. It’s horrible. Words cannot explain what has happened,” she told reporters.
Her public show of sorrow now appears to stand in stark contrast to the accusations against her. Detectives allege that the memorial may have been a calculated attempt to deflect suspicion.
Residents of Woodland Hills and those who knew Mirshojae expressed disbelief at the unfolding revelations. A former patient, Maria Lopez, shared, “Dr. Mirshojae was more than just a doctor; he was a kind and compassionate man. It’s heartbreaking to think of the pain he endured.”
